What a life my Mom had! She was 40 years old when I was born and herhair was long and silver gray. She raised nine children, buried 2babies. Being the wife of a farmer was a bit harder than just being awife. In 1946 when I got married, there was still no electricity in ourhome. So the way things were done was the hard way. We either carriedwater from the pond across the road or drew it from the well, heated itoutside in a huge old iron pot to do the laundry. After the laundry wasdone, scrubbed on the "rubbing board" that is, the rinse water was usedto scrub the old wooden floors of our kitchen. And sometimes it went onthe flowers. She made the soap, in the same old iron pot. It was called lye soap, andwas made with the rendered lard from the hogs we butchered, plus lye andashes. I do not remember how this was done. She also made hominy in that samepot. Oh, how I loved that hominy! Her bedsteads were all iron and shepolished them with kerosene on a cloth. Coal oil (kerosene) lamps wereour light. Also heated the curling irons in the globe for curling hair. She made everything we wore and cut her own patterns from newspapers.Materials were whatever she could find. Feed sacks, hand-me-downs shemade over, curtain fabric Aunt Laura would give her from the store whereUncle Albert worked, and sometimes she would order material from"NationalBellus Hess" or "Speigels" for 9 cents a yard, or so. In the winter time, she would have to break the ice in the water bucketto get water, and also break the ice in the wash pan so she could washher hands. Then she would build the fire in the big old wood cookstove. Then she would go to the enclosed porch where our winter supplyof meat was stored on benches and sugar cured or salted down. It wouldbe frozen of course, but she would slice enough for one meal at a time. She would set the old sad irons, which she used for ironing, on theheating stove and when we would be ready for bed, she would wrap them intowels and put them in our bed to warm it up. Oh, it felt so good! Whenwe went out in the bad winters we had to wrap our feet, shoes and all, ingunny sacks to keep the snow off. We had no overshoes of any kind. Most of the time she wore on her head, what we called a "dust cap".She made them from various cotton prints and they were very pretty. Somehad ruffles, some buttoned together. She skimmed cream from the milk for butter and always put it in thebutter mold which had a pretty flower on it. The butter was made variousways, depended on how much she was making. Sometimes we just shook itin a fruit jar. Also had a dasher churn that one had to stand and movethat dasher up & down quite hard. And the daisy churn that sat on the table and turned a handle.Always had lots of good butter! Most of it we sold. We would get in thewagon and go with butter and eggs and exchange for the things we couldn'traise. Such as sugar, flour, corn meal, salt and other kitchennecessities. Dad usually planted potatoes on St Patrick's Day. He would buy 100 lbsof seed potatoes and they would cut the eyes, (sprouts) 2 to a piece ofpotato leaving a fair sized piece in the center looking as tho it hadbeen peeled. Mom would put those pieces in a dishpan, cover it withwater then put a cloth over it and we would eat those as long as theylasted. To plant, we would drop those pieces with eyes in the furrow hehad made and cover them up. Lots of potatoes!! I remember one time Mom found in our grocery store some jelly in alittle blue and silver sorta striped bucket, which held about a quart. She bought that and we all thought that store bought jelly was thegreatest! She kept buying that for a long time. She made bread on Friday. Lots of bread! Eight loaves at a time andwould wrap them in teatowels and put them in the 25 lb lard stands. Thatis, what was left after we lit in on it while hot! That container wasairtight, just like a breadbox would be. It was a tin can with a tightfitting lid and held 25 lbs of lard when first purchased. But likeeverything else it had to have another use. She most always made a bigpan of cinnamon rolls, too, at the bread-making. I can almost taste themyet! She made all of us kids pick wild blackberries in season, and when shemade the cobbler it was two layers. The dough covered the pan, then alayer of blackberries, then a layer of dough, then another layer ofblackberries. Loved that cobbler, but the chiggers would nearly eat usup! I hated picking those berries and swore I would never do it again ifI lived to be an adult. And I haven't!!! My Mother was a patient woman and it was a good thing, since that kindabalanced the impatience of my Father! She wrote on the back of her marriage license the names and birthdates ofall of her children down to me. My entry was made by one of my oldersisters, but I do not know which one. I have a copy of this valuabledocument in my files. She was indeed, a wonderful Christian Woman, My Mother!! Spouse: George Washington TRISLER. Children were: Living, Living, Andrew DILLMAN Jr. Andrew DILLMAN Jr173,174 was born on 21 Oct 1751 in Northumberland, PA.173 Conflict with birth date of 1761. Also not sure if birth was in Adams county, PA or Northumberland, possibly because of county boundary changes it could be the same area. He served in the military in 1776 in Pennsylvania. Andrew served four years in the Revolutionary war, with three of his brothers, two of whom perished in that war, it is known that he was in the battles of Germantown and Brandywine. After his death his widow drew a pension which showed he was in the regular army not the militia. He died on 21 May 1823.173 His reference number is 2780. The Dillman-Rhorer Families Between 1725 and 1730 two brothers, Andrew Dillman and Jacob Dillman, migrated from Prussia, Germay to the American colonies. They were Dunkers or Dunkards, and came to the colonies to enjoy religious freedom. Andrew Dillman settled in what is now Adams county, Pennsylvania and Jacob Dillman settled in Franklin county, Virginia (the Shenadnoah Valley). Andrew Dillman Jr. was born October 21, 1751 in the city called Northumberland, Northumberland county, Pennsylvania and died May 21, 1823. He was a wheelwright by trade. He enlisted as a private in the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Army, under Captain Lewis Farmer, either on April 14, 1776 or on June 7, 1776, both dates being given in the official Pennsylvania Archives. On September 5, 1778 he was a private in Lieutenant Colonel Henry Miller's company and in 1780 he was in Captain Lieutenant ??? Stoy's Company, 2nd Pennsylvania (Colonel Walter Stewart) . From 1780 to 1800 he was a captian in the Pennsylvania Militia Pennsylvania Battalion. On August 1, 1777 he married Barbara Roush, who was then in her eighteenth year, being born on December 17, 1755 (died November 17, 1812). Andrew Dillman returned to the battlefield the morning following his marriage. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Burgoyne, Morecure??? and Yorktown, serving until the surrender of Cornwallis. In 1794 or 1795 he moved Kentucky by way of Pittsburgh, travelling down the Ohio river to ????(later called Maysville) Baron county, Kentucky in a flat boat. He settled in what is now Bracken county, Kentucky. To Andrew Dillman Jr. and Barbara Roush Dillman the following children were born, first chid died in infancy, Eve born in 1779, George born in March 1781, John born in March or November 1783, Susan May 29, 1785, Barbary born February 2, 1787, Frederick born November 14, 1788, Andrew 3rd born November 7, 1790, Julia born October 15, 1792, Catherine born December 22, 1792, Elizabeth born 18, 1795 , Conrad born October 25, 1798 and Samuel born in 1800. Abouth the time Andrew Dillman Jr. moved to Bracken county, Kentucky, The Rhorer, Bruners, Saudors and many other German Dunkard families moved from Maryland to Jessamine county, Kentucky which was about eighty miles south of Bracken county, Kentucky. The families had been acquainted with each other in Eastern communities. The Hoover family, some of whom were preachers settled in Clermont county, Ohio across the Ohio River and twenty miles further down the river from the Dillmans. During the yearly camp meetings of the Dunkards, which were held in Clermont county, Ohio the Rhorers, Howsers and Bruners all undertaking the trip ???. The home of Andrew and Barbara Dillman was one of the stopping places on the way where the travellers put up during the night as they went to and from the camp meetings. The children of the various families intermingled and as a result nine of the sons and daughters of Andrew and Barbara Dillman married sons and daughters of Dunkard families of Jessamine county, Kentucky. I have data relative to all the Dillman children, their marriages, deaths, etc., but have seen fit to include in this sketch only those relating to Barbara Dillman. John Rhorer was born Feb 27, 1786 and died May 14, or 17, 1869, Barbary Dillman Rhorer was born February 2, 1787 and died February 1 or 18, 1858. They were married in 1808 and at first resided in Clermont county, Ohio where all of their children were born. Later they moved to Decatur county, Indiana where both died. I have been unable to find any records dealing with the ancestry of John Rhorer. The name Rhorer appears frequently in the records of Pennyslvania. Johannes Rhorer and Johan Guttfried Rhorer arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship Robert and Oliver, sailing from Rotterdam, and landing in America on September 11, 17?? (Thirty Thousand Names of Immigrants, pp 118-119). Fredrich Rhorer arrived on October 9, 1727 from Rotterdam on the ship ???? (ibid p. 177). Friedrich Rhorer arrived on October 21, 1761, from Rotterdam in the ship Snow Squirrel (ibid p. 352); Friedrich, Jacob, and John Rhorer are mentioned in Pennsylvania Archives (Vol. 26 pp 496, 656, Vol 23, p 355 and vol 25, p 387, respectively. I do not know whether or not any of these early immigrants were ancestors of John Rhorer, but the frequent use of the name John, Johan, and Johannes makes it appear likely that such might have been the case. To John Rhorer and Barbary Dillman Rhorer were born the following children, Martin born May 17, 1809, Mary ?? (Polly) born August 18, 1810, Elizabeth born March 3 or 7, 1812, died January 5, 1881 and married a Davis. Magdaline born September 3, 1813 died August 4, 1845, Andrew born Sept 26, 1815 died August 24, 1853, John born June 21, 1817, Salena born April 20, 1819, died February 13, 1859 and buried a babe, Susanna born March 1, 1821, died July 26, 1886 and married a Daly?? Jemima born January 2, 1825 died January 27, 1859 and married a Brinkly, Barbara Ann born January 22, 1829 and died February 25, 1879 and married a ??, ?? Peter born September 12, 1829 and died Sept 19, 1852 and Julia Ann born 17 June 18722, died May 31, 1891?? who married Lewis Mobley.
