Austin's Dictionary of Rhode Island is authority for the following:
December 7, 1641, Thomas Sheriff and William Bown complained againstJames Laxford in an action of trespass. They attached four goats and alamb in the hands of Samuel Eddy and Joshua Pratt, amounting to 33s, andseveral other sums in other persons' hands.
December 10, 1666, Portsmouth. He deeded Thomas Hazard a quarter of ashare in Misquamicut and also paid him 20 pounds, receiving in exchangetherefore 30 acres in Portsmouth, and house, orchard, etc., all to belongto Thomas Hazard for life, and at the decease of Thomas Hazard to be forThomas Sheriff and wife, Martha, for their lives, and at death of both ofthem to go to second son, John Sheriff, and heirs, and for want of issueof John to go to third son Caleb Sheriff, etc.

Caleb SHREVE1,2 was born about 1652 in Rhode Island Colony. He died about 1741 in Burlington Co., New Jersey. Caleb Sheriff permanently settled in New Jersey on his marriage about1680. He lived after 1699 in Burlington county, seven miles east of thepresent site of Mount Holly. At that date his children numered seven. Theeldest, Martha was twelve years of age; the five next older were boys,with probably the youngest, Mary, an infant; a daughter and two sons wresubsequently born. Previous to the birth of the youngest in 1706. theoldest daughter, Martha, married in 1704.
The family remained unbroken by marriages until 1711-1713, during whichperiod Thomas, Joshua, Joseph, and Caleb married. The marriages of theremaining children occurred; Jonathan in 1720, Mary in 1721, Sarah in1724, Benjamin the youngest in 1729. After marriage the father gave eachchild a fine farm, the precise locations of which are not known. Theywere probably all living in Burlington County in 1739, as the poll bookof an election held in that county that year has in it the names of everyson and son-in-law, excepting John Ogborne. The four elder children hadsons old enough to vote, but they may have moved to other places. In thelist of voters is an Amos,Shreve and Caleb, Jonathan, Samuel and ThomasScattergood, who were probably sons of Martha Shreve and BenjaminScattergood. The descendants of Benjamin, the youngest child, havepreserved the best history of the family. He acquired from his father bywill the old homestead and became by contract with his mother sole heirto her property, to cover her interest in the rumored Amsterdam estate.This instrument was executed February 28, 1740-41, while she was livingwith Benjamin and after the marriages of her other children.
Caleb and Sarah Areson Shreve were members of the Society of Friends inBurlington County. Caleb's will was dated April 5, 1735. Calebchanged the family name from Sheriff to Shreve after moving to New Jersey.
Caleb was one of the earliest colonist of Western New Jersey. Thisimmigrant ancestor of the Shreve family was a thrifty and sagaciousEnglish Quaker, who purchased a farm in the Quaker colony established byJohn Fenwick, one of the purchasers of a large tract of land from LordJohn Berkley.
In 1664, after acquiring possession of the new Netherlands, the Duke ofYork executed "deeds of lease and release" for the Province of New Jerseyto Lord John Berkeley, Baron of Stratton and Sir George Cateret, ofSaltrum in Devon. In 1673, Lord Berkeley sold his half interest in theprovince to John Fenwick and Edward Byllinge, two English Quakers. In1675, Fenwick sailed from England in the ship "Griffith" with his familyand a small company of Quakers and thus came the first English immigrantsto New Jersey.
About the year 1688 or soon afterward, Caleb Shreve bult on this farm abrick house which is still pointed to with pride by his descendants as acherished family possession and from what is known of his history it canbe said that he had many sterling traits of characater, which have comedown to posterity. Caleb SHREVE1,2 was born about 1694. He died in 1746. S. H. Shreve of New York was a great-great-grandson of Caleb Shreve andhe took great interest in the latter part of his life in familygenealogy. All Shreve descendanats are indebted to him, and it is amatter of regret that he did not live to see some of his laudable hopesbear fruition, one of which was the purchase of the old homestead by anassociation of descendants, to be perpetually transmitted to latergenerations.

Charles Upton I SHREVE1,2 was born on 12 Jan 1828 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Charles Upton Shreve was educated at St. Mary's College in Marion County,Kentucky, in the class of 1845 and subsequently, studied law, and was amember of the first class that graduated from a Louisville law school.Impaired eyesight deterred him from at once practicing his profession,and his activities were later in other fields. In 1857 he engaged inmercantile business and at the same time was one of the editors andpublishers of the first society journal published in Louisville, the "BonTon" He was a senior member the firm of Shreve and Stewart, the firstwoodenware house established in the city,and for a time was interested inthe iron and hardware house of L.L. Shreve & Co. and a member of thebanking firm of J.P. Curtis & Co. and was associated with other localbusiness enterprises. Later he was engaged in coal mining operations inWashington Co., Ind. and in the manufacture of cement at Alton,Illinois. He was President of the Eureka Coal Mining Co and largelyinterested in developing the coal mines of Southern Indiana. The elderShreve died in 1869, leaving the management of his large estate to hisson Charles U. Shreve. He had been a sagacious investor in real estate,had acquired property interests in Louisville and Chicago valued at amillion and a half of dollars. His uncle's large estate was alsocommitted to his care and since 1874 his time has mainly been devotedthese interests.
Prior to the war, Mr. Shreve was an old line Whig and after the party'sdemise, he became a Democrat, although he he has never been active inpolitical affairs. Liberal in his religious views he has inclined to theUnitarian faith, with the Golden Rule as the governing principle of hisaction in all the relations of life. Earlier years of his life, he hada fondness for literature. Poems and prose sketches have been among theproducts of his pen. A gentleman of cultivated tastes, a beautiful home,planned and built under his supervision in such a way as to conform tothat definition of a home which declares it to be " a house whichpartakes of the individuality of the owner", is notable for its artisticand refined elegance. Mr. Shreve was affable in manner, attractive inmanner, attractive in conversation, warm in friendships, fond of outdoorsports and recreation, he lived in a genial atmosphere, and wellsustained the good name and high character of the family to which hebelonged. *

Col, Israel Shreve was a kinfolk to Judge William Shreve, who also servedin the American Revolutionary as a Major, Lt. Col. and Col., between theyears 1776-1781. Both made their way west. The Shreves were a closelyunited family.

Fayette Co. PA, also. Land owned by Colonel Israel Shreve, who maintained

From Encyclopedia Britannica; Henry Miller Shreve, U.S. river captainand pioneer steamboat builder who contributed significantly to developingthe potential of the mississippi waterway system. Shreveport, LA namedfor H.M. Shreve. When his father died in 1799, Henry began to maketrading voyages by keelboat and barge down the Monongahela and Ohiorivers. In 1807 he inaugurated the fur trade between St. Louis andPhiladelphia by way of Pittsburgh and in 1810 he began carrying lead fromGalena, IL near the upper Missippi. He became a stockholder and skipprof the "Enterprise" (the second steamboat on the Missippi), carryingsupplies in 1814 for Andrew Jackson's army and taking part himself in theBattle of New Orleans. In May 1815 the " Enterprise" with Shreve at thehelm became the first steamboat to ascend the Mississippi and Ohio tolouisville, KY. Shreve ; however, saw the need for an entirely new designfor river steamers and had built to his specifications the "Washington"with a flat shallow hull, a high-pressure steam engine on the main deckinstead of in the hold, and a second deck. His round trip in the"Washington" in 1816 from Pittsburgh to New Orleans and back toLouisville definitely established the Mississippi steamboat type. In1827 Shreve was appointed superintendent of western river improvementsand designed the first snag boat to remove from the river system thesunken tree trunks that often wrecked steamboats. In the 1830s heundertook the removal of an accumulated underwater obstruction of the RedRiver known as the Great Raft; his success opened northern Louisiana todevelopment and his workcamp turned into a permanent settlement asShreveport, 1838.

He weas the first man to bring a steamboat up the MIssissippi and Ohio
Rivers. He was also the man who smashed the stanglehold Col. Roosevelt
and his partners, Robert Fulton and Edward Livingston were trying toclamp on river transports; he designed the first shallow draft boat ,suitable for
rivers, the " Washington", and fiorsdt proposed the plan of pulling
river 'snags' by which channels are kept safe even today.

British forces had complete control of New Jersey by the end of 1776.They ransacked and looted and burned the homes; including Col. IsraelShreve's. Farmer ; British took over farm, Israel moved to Fayette Co.,PA around 1789.
Researching a battle that involved troops of Col Israel Shreve. Battle of
Cooper's Ferry on 05 April 1778 was a great embarrassment to Shreve. He
wrote at least two letters to George Washington about the matter. I have
copy of one of the letters discussing in great detail (I obtained the
photocopy at Davids Library of the American Revolution at Washington's
Croosing, PA). I have extensive records about this battle which involvedmy
ancestor, Corporal William Jobes, who was wounded and captured there.

I am descended from Col . William Shreve, Brother of Isreal Shreve, bothof
whom fought in the New Jersey militia during the revolutionary war. Family
history records that Isreal died the same day as did G. Washington. Isreal
died in PA, Washington at Mt. Vernon. Isreal reportedly experienced an
aborition at time of death, and his dying words were, "Washington! It's
Washington!"
