Thomas Taliaferro SHREVE1,2 was born on 4 Feb 1796 in Hagerstown, Maryland. He died on 5 Nov 1869 in Louisville, KY. He was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. He was a merchant, banker and manufacturer, who had a most interestingcareer as a busines man. He was greatly esteemed by all who knew him.Thomas T received his rudimentary education and grew to manhood inNicholasville, Kentucky. He began his business career as a clerk and byhis own energy and merit advanced himself to the proprietorship of aprosperous mercantile establishment in Lexington. Later he removed toGreeupsburg, now known as Greenup, Kentucky, and in company with hisbrother, L.L. Shreve, embarked in the iron business; they establishedrolling mills at Cincinnati. In 1832 T.T, removed with his family toLouisville and immediately took a prominent position in the businesscircles of the city. From about 1850 until his death, Mr. Shreve waslargely interested in banking in Louisville. Although a silent partner,he was the leading financier and capitalist in the banking house of J.P.Curtis & Co. Later he was member of the banking firms of Tucker, Brannin& Co. and of Shreve, Tucker & Co. His sagacity, his conservatism andhis large resources combined to establish perfect confidence in thinstitutions with which he was connected. After retirement, he continuedto take great interest to extend public improvements and develop theresources of the State of Kentucky. He was one of the original projectorsof the New Galt house and of the Louisville, Cincinnati & Lexington RR.Prominent member of the Masonic order, holding a high official position,he did much to promote the philanthropic and charitable work of thatfraternal organization. He wasnever active in politics, although he was a stanch Whig of the Henry Clayschool, and a warm friend and admirer of the great Kentuckian. Hecondemned the movement to secede from the Union, he tried to sever thebonds of nationality, but at the same time sympathized with his Southernkinsmen and friends. His homestead was one of the most notable in thecity, being the first private residence built of stone in Louisville andthe first to be lighted by gas. His home was a haven of domestichappiness. He entered the family circle to be happy himself and to makethose about him happy. His fondness for music and the strains of hisviolin frequently delighted those who made up his family and socialcircle. Beautiful relationship existed between him and his brother L.L.and the twin like bound them together during their entire lives. Singleand married, they lived under the same roof or in adjoining houses. Thefine old stone-front double mansion was located on Walnut, between Sixthand Centre Streets was standing in the 1900's (I wonder if it stillstands?) Standing in beautiful Cave Hill Cemetary, a colossal familymonument, jointly erected by the brothers, commemorates their unitedlives. On one side of the monument is carved the name of L.L. Shreve andon the other that of T.T. Shreve.*

*Memorial History of Louisville

I am most sure it was to this home that Jenny Lind came from Europe totour America. September, 1850 the steamer Atlantic arrived in New YorkHarbor with Jenny Lind aboard, thirty thousand people were waiting for aglimpse of the "Swedish Nightingale." P.T. Barnum, who brought Lind toAmerica and skillfully prepared the public for her arrival, had earnedhis reputation as the world's greatest showman. He would continue todisplay his public relations skills throughout her thirty seven city tourof the United States. *

William SHREVE1,2 was born on 4 Aug 1737 in Burlington Co., NJ.
I am descended from Col . William Shreve, Brother of Isreal Shreve, bothof
whom fought in the New Jersey militia during the revolutionary war. Family
history records that Isreal died the same day as did G. Washington. Isreal
died in PA, Washington at Mt. Vernon. Isreal reportedly experienced an
aborition at time of death, and his dying words were, "Washington! It's
Washington!"

I am proud of my Shreve connection-- my grandmother was Shreve. But Shreve
also married Newbold, who married Budd, who married Stockton, and I am a
direct descendent of Richard Stockton, who signed a letter of protest sent
to the Brits over mistreatment of Quakers. His Grandson signed the
Declaration of Independence for New Jersey. Through Stocktons, I am also
directly descended from Rev. Thomas Budd who died in a British prison
because of his religious beliefs. Stocktons, Budds, Newbolds, and Shreves,
all fought in the Revolution and gave us religious freedom.

Now,212 years later, my daughter had a Bible grabbed out of her hands by a
teacher at a public school in this same country.
