MY GRANDMOTHER, By: Tina C. Gilbert Nancy A. Trisler was my father's mother. She lived with us for a shorttime while I was in the 3rd grade. We lived in rural Skiatook, Ok. areaalong the banks of Bird Creek. Since there was an older sister and alsoa younger sister to me, I was the one to share a room with Grandma. Iloved it! So did she, I was her pet. She drew a civil war pension from Grandpa's original duty and subsequentpension. She carried her money in a cotton sack, a salt bag, which shepinned inside her under garments. I remember a pair of shoes she bought for me. They had black patentbottoms and a buff colored top with the black patent around the uppertop. They laced up with pretty eyes in little scalloped edges. How Iloved those shoes! Shoes were hard to come by in 1931, and we never had but one pair at atime. I also remember a big baby doll she bought for me the Christmasbefore she died. It was the only big doll I ever had! She had kept the greeting cards sent to her and grandpa by their childrenand families, and she would let me look at them. They were such a wonderto me! I remember looking at them and carrying them around as though they weregold. Well, they were. When she died, I got half of those cards. That was in1932, it is now 1998 and I still have those cards. They were like gold, because through those cards, I became a member of the Daughters of theUnion Veterans of the Civil War. And thro' this organization I was ableto obtain the muster rolls of my grandpa's during his 3 year tour of dutyduring the civil war. I remember her as a rather quiet woman, slim and straight as an arrow.Always wore a bonnet on her head. She had skin cancers on her face, lotsof them, and she used "lightening oil" as a treatment for them. No ideawhat it was, but she would just splash it lightly all over her face. My other grandpa (Crippen) died in December 193l and in January 1932 wemoved to Talala. WE had to take the other Grandma with us, so I lost myGrandma Trisler to Ross and his family. Was a very sad day for me! Iwas a child of 9 years of age. When she died in Avant OK the funeral home that took care of her wasfrom Barnsdall OK. Records of her funeral were lost in a fire thatburned the old Barnsdall jail where they were stored.
