He was born May 10,1833, to James and Fannie (Chapman) Fuqua, who reared a family oftwelve children, of whom only four survive. James Fuqua was a nativeof Kentucky and was born in 1800. He was reared to mature years in theBlue Grass region, and after his marriage came with his family toMissouri, locating at once in Ralls County, on the farm where his son,now makes his home, and where he was destined to pass the remainder ofhis life. He was public-spirited and active in local affairs, and fora number of years acceptably filled the office of Justice of the Peaceof this district. By strict attention to business and hard work heaccumulated a good property and became well and favorably known in thecounty. His death, which occurred in April, 1877, was the occasion ofwide-spread mourning. His wife was also born in Kentucky in the year1802; she was a devoted member of the Christian Church for more thanhalf a century and held a warm place in the affections of all abouther. Richard Fuqua was educated in the common schools, and when readyto commence in life for himself he married Miss Mary J. Hayden, theceremony which made them one being performed on April 30, 1854. With apartner to join him in the rough voyage of life, and to aid insteering their bark over dangerous places, he was content and soonbecame prosperous. Shortly after his marriage Richard Fuqua and hisyoung bride settled upon their present estate, and have made it theirhome ever since. The tract is one hundred and fifty-four acres inextent, well improved with buildings and all the necessary farmimplements, and the splendid manner in which it is tilled makes it oneof the finest tracts in the county. Mr. Fuqua has prospered in all hisventures and is now well-to-do in this world's goods. He is affableand courteous to all, and numbers his friends by the score among thebest people of the community. In his political views he affiliateswith the Republican party, which he believes to be in the right.
