He was the son of Henley andHarriet (Bailey) Haden, the parents of four children, of whom Cliftonand Robert Haden are the only survivors. The father was born about theyear 1811 in the State of Kentucky, and there grew to early manhood. His parents came to Missouri about that time, settling one mile northof where Clifton B. now lives, and where he was (later) born. In thisState Henley Haden met and married Miss Bailey, a native of Virginia. Her parents came to Missouri and became prominent people in the State. After acquiring a goodly fund of information in the common schools, and when twenty years of age, our subject determined to take untohimself a wife and helpmate in the person of Miss Frances Fuqua. He was enterprising and industrious, and his progressive spirit soon brought him to the front, andprosperity has attended his every effort. From time to time, as hismeans would allow, he purchased additional real estate, until he wasthe possessor of four hundred and forty-five broad acres, one hundredand fifty-six of which he has given to his son Robert. This, asidefrom being one of the largest estates in the county, is one of thebest improved, and consequently one of the most productive. "The Haden Family Helps To Settle Springfield" by Walter DarrellHaden, "Ozarks Quarterly", Volume 4, Number 4, March 1973 (Persi,Allen County Public Library, 31 March 1998); copy received from KayHaden: The Reverend Joel Harris Haden, to whom Mrs. Morrison's letterrefers, was born November 14, 1788, in Campbell County, Virginia. Heemigrated from Virginia to Kentucky, thence to Howard County,Missouri, and finally to Greene County. On September 1, 1835, he wasappointed the first United States Land Office Register at Springfield. The opening of this office opened the floodgates of emigration to thisfertile section of the Ozark Plateau. In 1838 he served on the boardof trustees appointed to form "A body politic and corporate, by thename and style of the inhabitants of the town of Springfield." In1840, his son Charles A. Haden, was appointed Greene County Treasurer.Joel Haden seems either to have organized or to have helped organizemost of the pioneer Christian Churches in Southwest Missouri, amongthem congregations at Fayette, Ashland, Mt. Mariah, Richland, Mr.Pleasant, and Pleasant Green in Howard and Cooper Counties. Howard andCooper Counties are in the central part of Missouri. Not ironicallythis circuit riding preacher also was said to have been more than alittle interested in racing horses. Pastor Haden's notions on thesport of horseracing, however, appear not always to have agreed withthose of his parishioners. George S. Escott's 1878 "History ofSpringfield" comments further on the strained relations between thefounder of Springfield and the Disciples minister: "When at one timehis attention was strongly drawn to religious John Polk Campbellconcluded to 'join the Church,' but he refused to go to Heaven withParson Joel Haden, to whose 'Christian' congregation Mrs. Campbellbelonged, on account of some old grudge he owen Father H., so he wasbaptised by a Methodist minister and connected himself with thatdenomination." (page 60, Springfield, Missouri: "The Patriot-AdvitiserCompany.") But circuit rider Haden's interest in good horsefleshcontinued throughout his long service in the church, a career haltedFebruary 7, 1862, when he died at Linwood, his retirement home inHoward County, Missouri. Today his oil portrait hangs in the FirstChristian Church of Springfield to honor the founding pastor of whatFairbanks and Tuck's 1915 "Past and Present of Greene County,Missouri" says "is practically certain............the second churchorganization in Springfield. Another deathnotice in "History of Greene County, Missouri" gives the followingunder Deaths During 1862: February 7, Reverend Joel H. Kay Haden, 508 Fairliewood Drive, Wetumpka, Alabama 36093: MarriageRecords of Greene County, Missouri 1833-1847 shows many marriagesperformed by Joel H. Haden, Elder in the Christian Church (E.C.C.).Helped to organize the Christian Church in Southwest Missouri. Helpedsome members of family to resettle in area as well. "Past and Presentof Greene County, Missouri" by Jonathan Fairbankes and Clyde EdwinTuck, Volume 2., circa 1915: First Christian. It is practicallycertain that the second church organization in Springfield was one ofthe Disciples of Christ, now more commonly designated as Christians. But unfortunately no historic documents are known to exist enabling usto state definitely and fully the facts connected with thatorganization. After careful inquiry no evidence has been found thatenables one to state the year of organization. When Francis M.Shockley, now residing at the corner of Lynn and Spring streets, camehere as a boy in 1841 this church was in existence and worshiped inthe old court house at the center of the Public Square. On September1, 1835, a United States land office was opened in Springfield, withJoel H. Hayden, a Disciple preacher, as register. To him by generalconsent is ascribed the founding of the First Christian church inSpringfield. He is also credited with the formation of a number offchurches of that faith and order in southwest Missouri. It isreasonable to conclude that the organization here antedates theothers: hence we may presume that it was effected in 1835 or 1836. Howlong this church of which Hayden was organizer and first pastorcontinued to worship in the old court house is not known; but sometime before the Civil War a substantial frame structure was erected atthe northwest corner of College and Main streets and was occupied fordivine worship for many years. Like other church buildings inSpringfield, this house ws taken by Federal authorities for use as ahospital. Recent efforts to secure remuneration for this use from thegovernment have thus far proved unsuccessful. On the erection in 1873of another house of worship the one before occupied was sold to ElyPaxson, undertaker, who occupied it as a dwelling house for severalyears. It is yet occupied as a dwelling, being apparently in a goodstate of preservation. Joel Hayden was followed by Jesse M. Wilks,Lansford Wilks, U.S. Elgin and some others, but the precise order anddates cannot be determined. John Haden was stated in the Captain JackJouett Bible record to have been the son of Anthony Haden "The Elder"and born 10th May 1723.
