now all men by these presents to that Francis Isbell, Livingston Isbell, Benjamin Cleveland & Richard Allin Esq... are held and firmly bound unto Abner Nash Esq. & Governor in the full and just ____of one hundred Thousand Proclimation money to be paid to said Abner Nash Esq. & Governor and his successors or_____ to the which paiment well will and truly to be made, we bind ourselves our heirs ect. and administrators jointly severally and firmly. By these ______ to sealed with our seal and dated this sixth day of March anno dom. 1781.

The condition of this obligation is such that if the above bound Francis Isbell, & Livingston Isbell administrator of all and singular the goods and chattals rights and credits of James Isbell deceased. James B. Isbell

James appears on the Orange Co. VA list of tithables; the list of Philip Bush in 1749, and that of John Bryant in 1756. These enumerated white males over 16, and slaves over 16. Bought 200 acres in Orange in 1754; in 1761 James and wife Frances of Orange sold this land. James of Albemarle Co. bought 320 acres in Orange in 1771. James and Frances of Albemarle sold 145 acres in Orange Co. in 1777 and 225 in 1779. Road overseer in 1775, also in western end of Orange.

Family records state that he and his wife are buried at the Old German Burying Ground near, Wilkesboro in Wilkes Co, NC. This may be the old Dutch Cemetery, across from Antioch Church, in eastern Wilkes Co.

A British mercantile claim says he had a very good estate in Wilkes Co., but before the peace he became deranged in his mind and shot himself; his estate after his death was squandered among his children, most of whom settled in the same neighborhood.

Other records show that he was still a surveyor in VA in 1720 (or about 1720) when his grandson Zachariah was born (b. abt 1722) (From Arkansas Family Historian, Vol 15, no. 2)

The Thomas Isbell place in Wilkes Co, NC is near the Grandin Baptist Church, off highway 268. The house burned in 1897, but in 1939 Ida, Cora and Clara Greer, great-granddaughters of Thomas and Discretion, still lived on the land.

Thomas was a Revolutionary Soldier (1753-1819) enlisted, 1776, in Capt. Thomas Walker's company, 9th Virginia regiment, under Col. George Mathews. He was born in Albemarle County, Va.; died in Wilkes County, N. C source DAR

James purchased 50 acres of land from Alfred Jones on Oct 19, 1855. On Sept 16, 1856 he purchased the interest of James R. Jones in Alfred Jones land. In the 1840 and 1850 Census of Jackson Co. He lived in District 13, and 1860 and 1870 Census he is in District 9, Putnam Co. TN. He was a farmer and in 1860 Agriculture Census of Putnam Co. he is listed with 75 acres improved land, 75 acres of unimpoved land, 3 horses, 2 mules, 4 milk cows, 2 oxen, 7 other cattle, 20 sheep, and 60 hogs. His farm produce per year was: 51 bushels wheat, 1 bushel rye, 1250 bushel corn, 60 lbs. wool, 50 bushel irish potatoes, 10 bushel swee potatoes, 50 lbs. butter, and 10 lbs. maple sugar.

Located at the corner of the Nashville road, now Highway 70, and the old Sparta road, the inn stood about two to three miles from Jim Brassell's home near what is now the Double Springs community, and it provided food and shelter for travelers passing through the area.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dora Isbell Ensor, 84, sister of Mrs. John H. Witson, Cookeville, were held Saturday at the First Methodist Church in Springfield and burial was in Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs. Ensor's death occured Friday at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, following a brief illness. A native of Overton County, she was th daughter of William and Amanda Starnes Isbell, and was the widow of Rev. Simon Ensor, a Methodist minister, and also a native Putnam Countian. Rev and Mrs Ensor called Robertson County home for several years while he was a minister at the Springfield and Cross Plains Methodist Chruches. For 2 years she had resided with a sister, Mrs Jewell Lee of Nashville. Besides her sister, she is survived by 4 sons, Edward of Miami, FL, Paul of Lawrenceville, GA, James of Galatin, and William of Conyers, GA., 3 daughter, Mrs. Roy Oakley of Livingston, Mrs Christine O'Neal, and Mrs. A. Brunson, Garland Texas; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

During the last year of his life (84), he became progressively more infirm. He was bedfast the last 3 months and was placed in a Nursing Home in Ft. Myers, Fla ("Integraded Health Services") .
On the morning of his death, he ate a good breakfast & 3 hours later became SOB with hemoptysis and rapidly expired. It was assumed the terminal event was a pulmonary embolus.
The funeral was in the Kiser Funeral Home and he was then interred in a sacrophage in a Naples, Fla Cemetery, where his brother, Tom & Lenore, his wife are buried.
Early in his life, hehad a job with White Castle in Danville, Ky. -- that owner was impressed with his work ethic & offered him the opportunity to be a partner in a new franchise --Jerry's Restaurant -- which was a huge success.
His family ran a dairy & he delivered milk in Danville as a youth.
He graduated from Centre College. Then, went to U of Louisville Med School. Internship in Atlanta, Ga @ Emory U. He began general practice in Hazard, Ky. & worked closely with Dr James E Hagan. He moved to Danville,Ky. & started a practice in 1945 & worked closely with Dr Stuart Hemphill. He had to cease practice in 1965 due to a Demerol Addiction & did recover from this. He then became a doctor for the mentally impaired children in Dawson Springs for several years at Outwood State Hospital. He then served in the same capacity in Louisville, Ky @ Outwood Hospital. Later, he retired to Fort Myers, Fla. where he lived until his death.
He was very revered in Danville, Ky. & had a huge practice.
He was a director at Citizen's National Bank, President of Central Kentucky Building & Loan, Chairman of the local public school board & instrumental in beginning integration in the 1950s before it was mandated.
