Fillmore, 2618 Bretton Road,Wichita Falls, Texas 76308), copy received from Sarah Sharpless:Captain Jack Jouett was a six foot four inch captain in the VirginiaMilitia, he is termed a 'minor hero of the American Revolution'because of the famous ride he made on the night of June 3/4, 1781 onside roads over thickly wooded terrain in order to save GovernorThomas Jefferson and the Virginia legislature then meeting inCharlottesville from capture by Tarleton. The ride was from CuckooTavern in Louisa County to Monticello and Charlottesville. Conceningthis event, Virginius Dabney declares in "American Heritage", December1961, pages 56-59, "His feat was more daring than Paul Revere's, butVirginia's hero had, alas, no Longfellow." For his courageous deed, which scarred him for life, the Virginia assembly voted him "anelegant sword and a pair of pistols." To commemorate further Jouett'scourageous act a brass tablet bearing his name has been placed in thefloor in front of the door to the main entrance at "Monticello". Theyear following his ride "Jack" Jouett removed from Virginia toKentucky, where he entered actively into local affairs and roserapidly to prominence. Hospitable, attractive, and high spirited, heentertained lavishly and made friends readily, numbering among hisintimates Clay, Jackson, the Breckinridges and the Marshalls. JohnJouett was instrumental in organizing the new state of Kentucky. Heahd been a member of the Virginia Assembly and he became aRepresentative in the first Kentucky Legislature. "Genealogies Of Virginia Families", Volume V, R-Z: Captain Jouett wasthe hero of the following daring deed: In the heat of theRevolutionary War, in June 1781, when Cornwallis was near Richmond, burning the barns, fences, and crops, and killing the horses of thefarmers of Virginia, he sent Colonel Tarleton, with 250 cavalry, on aspecial secret raid to surprise and capture the General Assembly, thenin session at Charlottesville, in Albemarle County, Virginia. Theirclandestine, rapid march was observed by Captain John Jouett. Hedivined their dangerous purpose, and started at once on his fleetthoroughbred horse to defeat their strategy. The passing, firing, racewas swift, daring and perilous - so hot and close that a singleunlucky bullet, or a misstep of his faithful steed, would placeCaptain Jouett at the mercy of the marauding troops. Fortune -Providence - favored the brave patriot. He gave the sudden warning, but so narrow was the escape of the Legislature that seven of themembers were captured. A copy of the concurrent resolutions adoptedDecember 12, 1786, shows the appreciation of the House and Senate ofVirginia of the daring and important service of Captain John Jouett inbaffling the scheme of Lord Cornwallis and his note cavalry leader,Colonel Tarleton.
