Thornwood was built three miles northwest of Nicholasville in 1847 by Otho Robards, a native of Jessamine County born Feb. 24, 1794. He served many years as sheriff, was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church, a public-spirited and liberal man - in politics, a Whig, and was a farmer and large slaveholder. He died Feb. 9, 1857. His widow, Cassa Robards, sold Thornwood to John Baker and Fountain Land in 1878. Land was the father of Mary Baker, John's wife. In 1888, Mary Baker received Land's part of the property. The Bakers had five children, John, Henry, Fountain, Helen and Martha. Helen Baker was deeded Thornwood in 1917. Helen Baker deeded Thornwood to the Nicholasville Baptist Church at the death of her two brothers, John and Henry, who had the use of the property until their deaths. In 1968, the property belonged to the church. The chirch rented the property to the Geroge Travis family for many years. It was sold to Sonya and Ben Smyth about 1982, and later sold to Sue and Ray Clark in 1984. Restoration began in 1984 and was the house was occupied in December 1987 by the Clarks. The brick was made on the farm and slaves probably helped to build the house. It was said that Otho Robrds lived in a log cabin on the farm and had a large family. He said he wanted to build a house large enough to contain Waveland, a Fayette County home just a few miles up the road. >From "Jessamine County Bicentennial Commemorative Book" Parents: Fountain William LAND and Martha Horton WILLIS.

William Irwin Land (2 Feb 1837 Madison Co KY - 30 Jun 1916 Deerfield, Vernon Co MO) is a brother of Murza Clemmons Land (1820 KY - 1896+Rush Co IN) m 1836 Madison Co KY,James L. Land (1814 KY - 1877 Jefferson Co IN) Their grandson, Lester Clarence Land (1888-1961+), wrote a family history in 1961 stating that his grandparents were second cousins and that he remembered a visit from his grandmother's brother, Bill Land , from Deerfield, MO. The only Land in Deefield, Vernon Co, MO is Wiliam Irwin Land. L. C. reported that Mathurza had two sisters Mahala Ross and Nightengale Northern, "Aunt Gilly". Mathurza Land was probably the daughter of John J. Land and Clara Warren. James L. was probably the son of Jesse Land m 1812 KY Sally Land.
