JOEL O. WALTERS was born in the eastern part of Kentucky January 18, 1824, one of seven children born to Luke and Evarilla (Lamb) Walters, natives of Virginia, who settled in Kentucky in an early day, moving thence to Sullivan County in 1830, and living in Haddon Township the balance of their lives. Subject came with his parents to Indiana when nearly seven years of age, received the ordinary education of the day, and was reared to farming, owning at the present time 300 acres of excellent land. He was married, March 28, 1848, to Nancy Land, and to their union were born ten children, five of whom are living--Mahala, October 15,1851; John W., September 12,1856; Martha A., November 1, 1859; William J., September 17, 1861; and Permelia, April 28, 1865. Mrs. Walters is a daughter of James and Jane (Willis) Land, and was born in this township, September 8, 1823. Subject and wife and all his children are members of the Christian Church at Providence, near Paxton. Mr. Walters had two grandfathers in the Revolutionary war, two uncles in the war of 1812, two cousins in the Mexican war, and three brothers and one cousin in the late rebellion--not one of whom, in either struggle, was shot or wounded, although all took active parts. He is a Democrat, and takes an active interest in the temperance cause, as well as in all public enterprises. Parents: James LAND and Jane WILLIS.

Former Resident Fails To Recover Health in South-Was Ex-Service Man
Oliver Morton Land a former well-known resident of Decatur county, died at his home in Tibbie, Alabama, Friday, according to word received by relatives here from his son, Herschell, also of Tibbie.
Mr. Land had been in declining health for several years and his death was not unexpected. He left here several years ago for the south in the hope that the change in climate would improve his health.
He was the second son of Casper W. and Mary E. Land and was born in Ripley county August 14, 1870. He died at the age of 55 years, 4 months and 6 days.
On February 17, 1898, Mr. Land was married to Stella Rodgers and to this union one child was born, Herschell, living with his father at the time of the former's death.
At the age of 21 Mr. Land enlisted in the United States regular army and served three years. Later he served an enlistment in the U.S. Cavalry and at the outbreak of a World War enlisted again. He was given a discharge, however, on account of ill health and went to the south.
Besides the son, Herschell, he is survived by a brother, Garnett Land, and a half-sister, Mrs. Curtis Crumes, both of this city, and a half-brother, William Land, of Rushville.
No word as to the funeral arrangements has been received here. Parents: Casper W. LAND and Mary E. LAMB.

Criminal History of Madison Co.for Last Two Years-French Tipton Papers-Written for the New York Herald from Richmond, Ky 12/16/1878:
May 27, 1878-Robert Land and Freeman Faris (the later colored) met at Lancaster in Garrard Co. where Faris killed Land with a musket. He was sentenced to hang but the Court of Appeals reversed the decision.
Madison Co Newspaper Kentucky Register-23 Aug 1878-Freeman Farris (Col) of Lancaster shot and killed ROBERT LAND.
Kentucky Register- 6 Sept 1878-Convicted of Murder, Farris seems to pride himself on the number of men he has killed. Suspected of murder of Luke O'Gera, the Irshman who disappeared near Paint Lick. Farris asked the authorities if he could marry his sweetheart so he could die happy.
