Martin, Revolutionary War Veteran, whose home was one of themost architectually significant of Jessamine County's brick homes. Hishouse was probably constructed in the decade prior to his death in 1801.(1790's) James Martin was a private in the Virginia line in theRevolutionary War. After the war, he went from Albermerle County, Virginia to JessamineCounty, Kentucky and settled there. (per the History of the Lewis Familyby W. T. Lewis) Same information related in the pedigree of WilliamMcChesney Martin to be found in The Compendium of American Genealogy,Volume 4, page 379. However, the Compendium lists John Martin as hisFather, rather than Thomas Martin. James Martin was placed on the pension role of Jessamine County, Kentuckyin 1833 at the age of 75 for service of private in the Virginia Lineduring the Revolutionary War. (From the DAR application of Lou Ann MartinFrazee, his great granddaughter.) From the Jessamine County RevolutionaryWar Pension applications: James Martin The above name soldier was livingon the line of Fayette and Jessamine Counties. when he applied forpension on 14 Mar 1833, age 74 years last August. He enlisted inAlbemarle County, Virginia in 1779. He also served in Wayne's Indian War.He stated that he left his father's house in 1788 and never lived thereafterward. In 1833 he stated that he had been living in KY about 47years. When he died in 1848 he left the following children: LetitiaMetcalf, Richard Martin, Amanda Arthurs and Lewis T. (sic) Martin.Pension Application no. S-31236. The house that James Martin built is still standing as of December 1998.The land that this house was built on was probably an grant claimed byJames Martin as a payment of his war service. The exact date ofconstruction is not known but thought to be after the war, approximately1790. There is no record of his grant application in either FayetteCounty (formed in 1798 nor in Jessamine County.) However, Fayette Countyrecords do indicate the property as being owned by Judith Young Martin, his wife, in 1791. In that year, they sold 9 acres along Hickman Creekfor a number of "pounds, lawfull money" to James Young, probably abrother of Judith's. A picture of the house can be found in the scrapbookattached to James Martin. A brick from his house is in the possession ofPat Tachick, his great-great-great-great granddaughter. This house wasbeing remodeled in December of 1998 to become a bed and breakfast. Thishouse is located in Jessamine County on Tate's Creek Road. James Martinis supposedly buried on the grounds of his house, but not grave site waslocated by this writer. This house was inherited by his son, Lewis YoungMartin, who had a ranch there all of his life. Lewis Young Martin'swidow, Ann Barnett Shreve continued to live at this house after herhusband's death. Upon her death in 1887, her son, William Upton Martininherited the house. Dr. Martin sold the house, then 206 acres in 1889 toWilliam Tandy Chenault, who in 1893 sold it to a V. K. Tudor. In 1915, itpassed to Lee Congleton, who in 1917 sold it to Addie and Charles McCray.McCray sold the property in 1937 to Hugh R. Taylor, who in 1941 sold itMr. and Mrs. Robinson. The intervening years has seen the removal oftwo-story columns, traces of which remain on the Flemish Bond front. TheRobinsons removed a "bungalow-type" porch that had been substituted. Thehouse Martin built has a simple L-shaped plan-two rooms on each floor inthe main Two-story section now backed by a lower two story section and aone story kitchen. The simplicity of the plan and the exterior contrastswith the elaborately carved woodwork on the interior. Oddly enough, bothare indications of its early construction. In 1844, when the old soldierprobably was 86, he legally declared that "finding myself unable andunwilling from my age to mange my farm Negroes think it best upon duereflection to hand over the whole concern to my son Lewis G. (sic)Martin." Martin apparently died the next year. His will was proved inOctober 1845. His son, Lewis Young Martin, in turn left the property tohis wife, Ann Barnett Shreve, when he died at the burning of thesteamship, Eliza Battle on the Tombigee River. On the grounds of the farmare the remains of an old distillery and the foundations of the firstBaptist Church can be seen. According to an article in the SundayHerald-Leader on January 18, 1959, James Martin, although handing over"the possession of the farm upon which I now live, " reserved "the house, garden, one stable lot, the spring lot and so much of the orchard as Imay want for my own use." The next year he did indeed want for his ownuse part of the orchard. He was buried in a corner of it under a stonejust as he probably would have wished: "Here lies an old soldier of '76".The initial "G" indicated in James G. Martin's name comes from anewspaper article written about his house and the newly remodeled jobdone in the early 1960's. No other record of this initial has been foundto date. This same article, the original in possession of Mrs. FrancisCornelia Martin Troutman, and a copy of which is in the possession of PatTachick, P.O. Box 573, Sandia Park, NM, indicates that Martin's last namewas at times spelled Martain. Martin must have been in his late teenswhen he fought the British during the Revolutionary War. Collins' Historyof Kentucky names his as one of Jessamine's (County) surviving soldiersof the Revolution and gives his approximate age as 82 in 1840. Accordingto The Compendium of American Genealogy, Disk 2, Volume IV, LineageRecords, First Famlilies of America, pedigree of William McChesneyMartin, located on page 379, JOHN MARTIN is the Father of James Martinand JANE GREGGS is his Mother. James Martin applied for a pension basedupon his service in the revolutionary war on March 14, 1833, Applicationnumber S-31236.
