on land which now includes the Slope County Fairgrounds. Lloyd attended
grade school in Amidon through the 6th grade, when he left school to help
support his family. He worked on various farms and ranches in Slope
County from 1921-1933, except for a two-year period spend in Texas,
working on a ranch near Lubbock, TX. Returning to the Slope County area,
he realized the dream of most cowboys of the time, when he courted and
won the local "school marm", Marion German, whom he married in October
1933. Lloyd and Marion continued working ranches in the Billings County
area of the badlands, working for ranchers such as Don Short and Vern
Peshek. Their plan (and Lloyd's dream) was to build a herd, and
eventually go into ranching. Children were born - Milton (Mac) in 1935,
Marlys in 1936, and Kay in 1940. With the outbreak of World War 2, Lloyd
anticipated being called. He sold his small herd and moved his family to
town (Medora), where they would live ujntil his return. In the event,
however, he was found not physically qualified, due to injuries from a
childhood accident, when he was dragged by a horse. He went to work for
the Northern Pacific Railroad, since prices had gone up so quickly he
could not buy his cattle back. He remained with the railroad until his
death in 1964.
