' The will of John Perkins, written Sept. 23, 1799, is recorded in Louisa County (pp97-99 Will Bk 4). The widow continued to pay personal taxes until 1824. He left all his estate to his wife during her widowhood. After that "the same shall be equally divided among all my children now living, and the children of my deceased son, Jesse (that is to say my said son's Jesse's children to receive the part he would have been entitled to provided he had lived.) to wit Nancy Wilkerson, Michael Purkins, John Purkins, Molly Farr, Anthony Purkins, William Purkins, Samuel Purkins, Suky Johnson, Salley Pulliam, & Betsy Seargent, and my said son Jesse's children, to wit, Polly John Frances Betsy and David..." ' [maybe this is the David somebody was looking for. A grandson of John, and son of Jesse.] There is a continuation ' "Item I give to my son Samuels children by his first wife to wit Joseph Nancy Jane Richard and Benjamin thirty pounds..." After her death, it was to be: "the same shall be equally divided among all my children now living, and the children of my deceased son Jesse. . ." Occupation: planter and farmer. William & Mary Q 21: 146 (lst series): received a deed from Luke Anthony, Sr., his father-in-law. 100 acres of land was left to John and Mary Perkins by the will of Luke Anthony in 1790. The land, 100 acres was conveyed to Peter Bibbs of St. Paul's Parish 3 Feb. 1701. Wm & Mary Q 22: 172. John Perkins held public service claims for patriot service rendered during the Revolutionary War. (On file in the Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA) John Perkins paid taxes in Louisa Co., VA from 1782-1799. In 1782 he owned 280 acres and by 1797 his holdings increased to 400 acres.

MOTHER AND THREE CHILDREN DROWN

A heart-rending tragedy occurred in the Kentucky river, just below themouth of Silver Creek, between this and Jessamine counties on last Mondaynight. Mr. John Sanders, his wife and three children, who reside in thiscounty, had been over in Jessamine county to visit the parents of Mr.Sanders. About 9 o'clock they left for home. Mr. Sanders carried alantern. Upon reaching the river he placed the lantern in the canoe infront of him, and started across. One report says the lantern went outleaving such apparent darkness that Mr. Sanders could not see where hewas rowing, and another says that the lantern so blinded him that hecould not see. Be that as it may, the canoe ran into a chute, which beadsimmediately below the crossing, and capsized. The mother and threechildren were instantly drowned, but Mr. Sanders escaped. Mrs. Sanderswas a daughter of the late Mitchell Perkins of this county, and wastwenty-five or thirty years old. The oldest child was six or eight yearsold, the youngest a baby of twelve months, and the other one was betweenthose ages. The crossing where this fearful accident occurred, has formany years been used by a neighboring church on occasions of baptisms. Alarge crowd of men, women and children assembled there on Tuesday, butnot one of the bodies could be found.

LATER - The bodies have all been found. The children were all closetogether and not far from the mother. It is now learned that the canoedid not get into the chute, but struck a pile of drift, and Sandersthinking it the shore, stepped out upon it. It sank with him, and in someway the canoe turned over with the results already stated.
