Rev. John G. POND died at Perryville last Friday, age 85 years . For over a quarter of a century he was pastor of the Mount GILEAD Baptist church, this county*. Four children survive him, Miss NETTIE POND, Mrs ELY, Mrs. SALEM ROSS, and a son JOHN POND. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday last at Mount GILEAD, followed by internment in the cemetery there beside his wife who died two years ago. Mr. POND was a familiar figure to the citizens of Madison CO.. He was a man of great strength of character and Deep piedly. He was a valiant Union soldier, a Colonel of a COLORED REGIMENT.** His death will cause widespread regret.

Here is a couple of items I have found. Of the 11th Cavalry Regiment, comapny A was a mixed company from Garrard and Madison counties raised by Captain John G. Pond, a Baptist minister raised on Back Creek of this County, whose father Griffin Pond came from Virginia with the Craig group to Gilbert's creek. This is on page 136 of a book "History of Garrard County".
Second Item Found:
Absolem Quinn and John G. Pond grew up in this church and were ordained to the ministry. Quinn spent his life here and Pond removed to Madison County, where he preached at a church called Gilead until just a short time before his death about 1898. He was born in 1813. This is on page 301 of a book "History of Churches".

Joseph R. POND1 was born in 1777. He died in 1855 in Madison Co., Ky. White Oak Pond Church is located at the corner of Barnes Mill Road and Goggins Lane in Richmond, Kentucky. Take Exit 87 West 3/4 mile on the right.
White Oak Pond Church is the oldest church in Madison County on its original site (Tates Creek Baptist Church is Madison County's oldest congregation). The Pond Church began as early as 1790 in a log church that was the "Meeting house" and community center for the first settlement, Milford, also the first county seat. Much of the history of what took place at Pond is lost, as historical records burned while stored in the house of a church member. Two brothers, Joseph R. Pond and Griffin Pond, were strong leaders in the church, one dying early in life contributed to the name White Oak Church to White Oak Pond Church.
