SAND KY27-"Courier-Journal" newspaper, University of Kentucky footballteam. SAND KY48-Letter from Curtis Moore Sanders to Dr. and Mrs. John J.Owen, 28 January 1988, listing events of earlier years. Information from Alleen Horine, 3 May 1990; Curtis Sanders middle nameof "Moore" was taken from the Rev. E. Moore. Curtis, was a football player of note at UK. He is one of the featuredplayers in book by Russell Rice, "the Wildcats Kentucky Football".Published by The Strode Publishers, Inc, Huntsville, Alabama 35802.Copyright 1975, Library of Congress Catalog Number 75-26071, StandardBook Number 87397-075-6. According to Rice: -- "probably the best fullback to ever play for the University ofKentucky." --"Sanders,was captain of the1924 Wildcatsand had the honor of scoring the first 16 points on the new StollField. "Louisville was the opponent for the dedication at thebeginning of the season. Before 5,000 fans in the finished half ofthe stadium, Sanders started the scoring by plunging through centerfrom one yard out and kicking the extra point. In that same firstquarter, he threw a key pass to Charles Turkey Hughes and kicked a 25yard field goal. He scored his final six points on a 25 yard run inthe second quarter." --Sanders scored 51 points that year and was the Wildcats' bestdefensive back. For years all UK fullbacks would be compared to himand found lacking, both in overall ability and total dedication." --"A virtual iron man, the six foot, 185 pound farm boy fromNicholasville averaged almost 60 minutes a game for four years, playing in constant pain from midway through his sophmore year untilhis final game in 1924." --"He played five games with a broken right hand in a cast, had hisnose broken four times, played with both shoulders separated, hadbone chips in both ankles, and kept right on tackling despite damagedcartilage and vertebrae in his neck." --"The victory over mighty Alabama in 1922 ranks as the most notableUK triumph during Sanders' varsity career. Sanders caught a 20 yardpass and gained nine crucial yards in three carries to help set up aseven yard scoring run by Bruce Fuller, and he had 29 of UK's 53carries and 93 of its 125 yards." --"He coached football, basketball, and baseball six years at PaducahTilghman High School; basketball two years at Paducah Junior College;and returned to Lexington as basketball coach and teacher ofmathmatics at the old Picadome High School. He coached basketball andbaseball 14 years at Berry High and was Vo-ag instructor at theconsolidated Harrison County High before retiring to his 355 acrefarm." _ "There were no scholarships, and I didn't get any help, if you knowwhat I mean. There wasn't too much support for the players. We evenpaid our own tuition. I worked in tobacco, as a lifeguard, plumber'shelper, millwright's assistant, night clerk in a hotel, waiter, elevator operator, fraternity house manager, and bill collector. Ipushed a concrete buggy, parked cars in an all-night garage, drove abus, sold dry cleaning tickets, worked on a railroad repair gang, drove T-Model Fords from Cincinnati for $5 each trip, and helpedbuild Dix Dam." _______________________________________________________ The Kentucky Post, Monday, Feb. 10, 1992, Page 4K Cols. 1-3 (Pieces ofthe Past (by Jim Reis)): Excerpt-- Referencing the fire that almost wiped out Berry on Aug. l,1932. TheBerry Eagles under Coach Curtis Sanders won the 10th Region and aticket to the state tournament by beating the Maysville Bulldogs. The Eagles beat Dorton High School 50-39 in the first round, but lostto Lexington Lafayette in round two. Lafayette won the statetournament that year. "The David Sanders farm is near the Kentucky River where Madison, Garrard and Jessamine Counties meet. The local people say before the lockes were built David and other farmers worked both sides of the river - drove their team and wagons across the river when it was low. The farm is on a high hill and you can see into Madison County. We were told Rebecca could wave to family in Madison County. The family graveyard is on the highest part of the farm, looked down on from the large two story log house. We were told four beds would be in the bedrooms with room left to be nice for the family. Some rooms had wood walls inside. The house had been covered with weather board. The old house stood until the 1950's, always in family hands. That part of the farm has been sold and the old log house was taken down and some of it was good enough to be used in another house in another county. The part of the farm with the graveyard still belongs to a family member, a granddaughter of Elizabeth Sanders (Peter's sister)." Comment from Charles Sanders: House was still there when I visited it in Oct 1972. _______________________________________________________ Ruth R.
