I have always been an old line Whig. I loved the people of the South______ well to be allowed a vote these times. I am old fogy enough to love the Constitution as it was left us by our first fathers, am opposed to the 15th amendment and hope to live long enough to see a white man considered good as a nigger. I have been a member in good standing in the Baptist Church of Nashville--twenty-five years and hope to live so till I die. I pay my taxes always, helped to work on the public roads and improve the county. I think the JOURNAL is just the paper to please the people and wish it all success. With my best wishes, I am very Truly Yours, Drury Sanders" He died 78 years, 5 m, 23 d, and is buried next to his second wife Elizabeth. They are buried in the Nashville Cemetery in Sapp, MO. His obituary says "he died at his home near Nashville Church (which is by the cemetery) Monday 9/02/1889, after a three week illness of typhoid fever, he was 79 years old. When he came to Missouri he settled near Providence. He married Elizabeth Colvin on May 06, 1834. He does have a an estate file #4166 in Boone County. However, he died intestate so there is no actual will, just a disposal of properties. However, he appeared to be pretty well off for the times. When I looked up the estate file on Drury, he was the conservator for his minor children. The will of his father-in-law Benjamin Colvin left money to his deceased daughters four children who were Mary A, Cynthia, Nancy, and Katherine (Kitty). Then there was Elizebeth, born after his second marriage to Elizbeth Prouty. (The rest I don't know about, unless they were Elizabeth Prouty's by her first husband). *********************************************** 1860 census of Boone county, MO Cedar Township, July 20. Solari lynden@goldrush.com 1/18/02 Full account of Drury's letter to the "Boone County Journal," Columbia, MO, issue of Aug. 4, 1870, pg. 1: Names of Old Citizens: "I was born in York District South Carolina in 1811, came to Boone county in 1832. With my best wishes I am very Truly Yours, Drury Sanders." The same issue of the paper carried a letter in the same column from Garland Colvin, dated 20 July 1870 at Providence, MO. He wrote: "Seeing you desire a list of all the old men in the county for publication, I send mine to add to the rest. I was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1802. I came to this county in 1819. This state was Missouri Territory at the time, but afterwards admitted into the Union. I found game of all kinds, plenty and enjoyed myself very much hunting. I killed one bear, several panthers and deer without number. My father was a Soldier of 1776 and fought six long years for our Independence. I was always a True Blue, old line whig, regularly paid my taxes, helped to work the roads and improve the County. I am a law abiding citizen and by the tightest am allowed to vote. Wishing the Journal all success. I am respectfully your friend. Garlan [sic] Colvin." The truth of the matter is, Garland's father, Benjamin, served for a period of about 9 months during the Rev. War - nothing like six years. He may have heard that from Benjamin himself. Could be old soldiers are a bit like fishermen who are always catching that monster fish which manages to get away!
