John D. Shane's interview with John F. Shryockincluded in Lyman Draper's "Draper Manuscripts", now at the StateHistorical Society of Wisconsin, gives Frederick's observations inSection 11CC of the "Kentucky Papers". Shane's interviews were said tohave been made about 1843 to about 1849. John Frederick reports histrip, with his party, down the Ohio River in several flatboats. Thefirst site mentioned is the mouth of the Little Scioto River, where agreat number of Indians had assembled to sign a treaty. He alsomentions the mouth of the Kanahwa River, Wheeling and the "muskingum"River. We have no indication of the start of the river trip, but sinceit was stated to be in the Fall of 1788, it would have been in the lowwater season. Low water trips usually started at Wheeling, now WestVirginia, rather than at Redstone on the Monogahela River. The floatended at Limestone (now Maysville, Kentucky). The overland trip toFayette County, Kentucky was probably over the ancient Indian WarTrail. While Frederick was a taxpayer in Bourbon County, in March,1791, his daughter, Catherine was born in Fayette County in 1790.There is a deed to him, 1 November 1792, for 90 acres of land nearDavid's Fork. Miss Lorena Lowell, a great granddaughter of Frederick, stated, on 3 November 1941, that Frederick owned 800 acres in FayetteCounty. He gave 100 acres to have his house built. The stone came froma quarry on his land, as well as the timber. Frederick was a wealthyman of his time; in 1810, there were thirteen in his family plus sixslaves. (Children of John Frederick and Frances "Phrene" (Troutman)Shryock were named).

The "Settlement of JohnFrederick Shryock", 17 March 1859, shows a disbursement of $25,775.00,a veritable fortune for that time. At his death, there was but oneparcel of land, that on which Frederick's house stood. It was boughtof the estate by his daughter, Adah, and her husband, Noah Low. SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: It isbelieved that Christian came to Frederick County with his parents andsome of his brothers and sisters, between 1741 (Anna Barbara's baptismat York) and 1747 (date that Johannes signed the "MuhlenbergConstitution" at Old Monocacy. The Frederick County Deed G-156 showsthat a Christian Shryock purchased land from Daniel Dulaney in 1764.Numerous deeds are found in the succeeding years, naming Christian asa farmer and shoemaker. The 15 April 1788 deed (W. H. 8-F-21) giveshis wife's name as Eva Maria. In a 1769 deed, she was called Mary. By1802, Christian had made two deeds in which his wife was namedMagdalena. Evidently, Anna Maria had passed on after 1788 and before1795 (W. R. 13-F-316).

SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: From thebible of Valentine Shryock, Jr., Christian's grandson, we find thatChristian died 10 October 1822. Mrs. Johnson's researchers found anitem in the "Frederickstown Herald" of 9 October 1822. "Died onThursday, the 10th inst., in the vicinity of Creager's Town, Mr.Christopher Schroyock, in the 89th year of his age, having sustainedan umblemished reputation through life." In actuality, Christopher(Christian) was 87 years and a few days old. An error of several yearsin reckoning a long life was not uncommon in colonial days.

SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: Baptised byJohn Casper Stoever; Stoever entered this baptism in the LancasterLutheran Records as well as the York Lutheran Church (Codorus)Records. This item is No. 23 in Volume I of the Records of ChristLutheran Church, York, Pennsylvania. (The church was founded in 1733.)

SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: Christian wasa devout Lutheran. A 1774 deed shows Christian as one of two LutheranChurch Trustees, who joined with two Presbyterian Church Trustees toreceive a tract of land for a schoolhouse and chapel for jointLutheran-Presbyterian use. This site has been the object oflong-lasting searches. Some people think that the log church was in afield on the south side of Creagerstown. Others, think that it was onthe Shryock land on Hunting Creek. In 1763, there is a record ofChristian's "free-will" offering of 10 Shillings towards the interiorimprovement and completion of the Evangelic Lutheran Church inFrederickstown. Christian was a sponsor at several baptisms, as wasAnna Maria. He is also recorded as a witness to a number of weddings.

SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: Christian hadmade and signed his will on 10 October 1820; it was recorded 28October 1822.

SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: In his will,Christian names his living children and the living children of hisdeceased son, Valentine. Maria Catherina, who married John CasparSchaffner, is not mentioned as an heir. Mrs. Johnson suggests thatMaria and any of her children may have died before the date of thewill. More probably, the Schaffners had moved on to Kentucky and losttouch with Christian. A certified copy of Christian's will appears onpage 11 of "The Shryock Line". Parents: Johannes George SHRYOCK and Barbara LNU.

Spouse: Eva Marie SHYROCK. Christian (Schreyack) SHRYOCK and Eva Marie SHYROCK were married about 1755 in (probably) Frederick County, Maryland. Johannes George SHRYOCK1,22 was born in 1702 in Palatinate, Germany. [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: Signed] His reference number is 952. Born 1702; French Huguenots, Palatinate, Germany; Immigrated 28 August1733 on the Ship "Hope"; Lived in "monocacy" near Creagerstown,Frederick County, Maryland; "The Shryock Line" by Rhea D. Johnson;Church record names Susannah Elizabeth and gives her mother's name asSusanna; Perhaps the wife's name is Susanna Barbara or the first wifedied and Barbara is the second wife; There is a 10 year age differencein the children; Bible of Valentine Shryock, Jr., 1787-1843, (grandsonof Christian) lists Christian Shryock married, (1) Eva Maria, (2)Magdelana, before 1 June 1795; "Pennsylvania Pioneers" byStrassburger.

SHRK PA04-Correspondence and notes from Achilles Bellucci, Route 4,Box 9330, (21 Cassie Street) Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: JohannesGeorge Schreyack is listed in a number of variations of the spellingof his name, sometimes in Dutch, and then, again, in German. Some ofthe variations are, Hans Jerick Schreyack and Hans Jerg Schreyack(Strassberger), Hans Georg Schreyack (Rupp), and Johannes GeorgeSchreyack, which is an English translation of his name as it appearsin the Lutheran Chruch Records. Schreyack eventually settles down tothe accepted spelling of Shryock. Mrs. Rhea Duryea Johnson, in "TheShryock Line", goes back as far as Alarick Schriek of the FirstCrusade. It is believed that the family descends from the Brabantsection in the southern part of Holland. In the 1600's, the familyemigrated to the Palatinate, near Hanover, Germany. Johannes was theson of Friedrick von Schriek and Hildegarde von Steuben. JohannesGeorg Schreyack and two younger brothers, Hans Michael and Jacob, sailed from Rotterdam on the ship "Hope" of Longdon and arrived inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania on 28 August 1733. (Rupp's "30,000Immigrants") It is known that Johannes was accompanied by his wife, probably named Susanna ______ and a daughter, Susanna Elizabeth. Thesignatures of all three Schreyacks are preserved in the Records of thePhiladelphia "Oaths to the Government", proving that they were allliterate. There are many records of Jacob Shryock in ShenandoahCounty, Virginia where he owned most of the present town of Edinburg. In the early 1700's, Edinburg was known as Shryock. Hans Michael hadan extensive Revolutionary War military record. He settled inHagerstown, Maryland and spent some time in Fayette County, Virginia(now Kentucky), where he owned land. Very little is known of Johannes'wife, other than her name was Susanna and she was born in Germany in1705. The birth record of Johannes and Susanna's daughter, SusannaElizabeth, says that she was born in Gahsheim in Wurtembergish(Wurttembert, a region of Germany), in 1725; her mother's name wasSusanna. Mrs. Johnson speculates that the name should have beenrecorded as "Susanna Barbara". She also speculates that Barbara mighthave been Johannes' second wife because ten years separate the birthsof Susanna Elizabeth and Christian, the only children of Johannes. Theearly church records of Creagerstown, Maryland were destroyed in afire, so we are unable to find additonal data. Given the records ofJacob and Hans Michael, it is reasonable to assume that Johannes was asubstantial land owner and farmer in Frederick County.

Stoever, senior or junior, were ordained at the time that they cameto "the colonies". In 1733, J. C. Stoever, Sr. received a call fromthe Hebron Church in (now) Madison County, Virginia. In that sameyear, both Stoevers were ordained in the Lutheran Church. John Caspar,Jr. remained in Pennsylvania, where he is known to have performedmarriages and baptisms at least 3 1/2 years before his ordination.Since there were no church books, he kept a record of these events ina personal journal. From Stoever's and Kraft's records, we find thatJohannes had other children besides Susanna Elizabeth and Christian;namely, Johann Leonhardt, born 26 January 1738 and Anna Barbara, born22 September 1741. Thus, we find one child born in Germany, threechildren born in York, Pennsylvania, and no indication of childrenborn in Frederick County, Maryland.
