Verl Stephenson STINCHCOMB220,474 was born on 24 May 1913 in Cincinnati, Ohio.475 Between 1930 and 1968 he was in Golf Professional. He retired in 1968 in Elks Club G.C. Portsmouth, Ohio. He died on 31 Aug 1981 in Pembroke Pines, Florida.476 He was buried on 3 Sep 1981 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. His reference number is 2. Verl always said that he knew what he wanted to do all his life fromthe time that he was nine years old.
He started out caddying ( carrying golf clubs for members ) atLosantiville golf course in Cincinnati,Ohio. Later he obtained a job ofassistant in the Pro shop, and with diligence and better knowledge of thesport, he was appointed as assistant Golf Professional at LosantivilleG.C. After a few years he became a Professional Golfer in his own right, and was the Pro at several courses in the Ohio area. He worked atMadison,Indiana.,Maysville,Kentucky.,Ashtabula,Ohio.,And last at The ElksCountry Club in Portsmouth,Ohio. If he was called by an associate or afriend at another golf course with a problem, he always helped inwhatever way he could. Verl asked for advice himself on occasions that hedid not know how to handle properly. He took pride in his sport, his family, and his friends, butwas not himself a prideful man. He was always courteous to all, and amore honest man could not be found. He said that there was not a person, but that he could get along with. He loved children, and established a kids League that played in thesummertime. He charged members and other adults for Golf lessons, but hegave lessons to kids on Saturdays for no fee. He only charged for thiswhen asked by an adult to teach a specific child .
He retired from the Elks Club in 1968. He had had problems with theboard of trustees of the Elks, where they wanted an increased share ofhis profits earned as a Professional Golfer and businessman at the Club.Even in this he was courteous . He left their employ to enter retirementwith no resentment or rancour, or regrets. He did the best job he wascapable of doing, and had done it well.During his retirement he did serve as an official at several smallertournaments, also doing the best possible job he was capable of as anumpire. His happier moments were spent on a Golf course, playing a roundof Golf, and listening for that sharp sweet sound that occurred when theball was properly hit.
His last years were spent in Pembroke Pines, Florida, where he calledhome. He spent time caring for his home and yard, and liked to go to therace track to watch the racehorses run. He was not a Gambler per se, buthe liked to bet a two or three dollar ticket sometimes. He often told methat some races are impossible to call, and he wouldn't bet on them. Henever came home a loser of more than five or ten dollars, and was awinner more than not.
He died on August 31,1981 from complications with Diabetes, the diseasethat had plagued him for the last thirty years of his life. He was my Father, and I miss him!
John Stephen Stinchcomb November 10,1999

Verl's first car was a 1929 Peerless. One of his father Stephensco-workers at Herschede Hall clock asked Stephen if Verl had a car. WhenStephen replied no, the man told him he would give him a Peerlessautomobile, But Verl had to get it running as it did not run at the time.Stephen and Verl towed the car home, and put it in the carriage housebehind Stephens house. Verl and Stephen tore the Peerless down to barechassis, and put it back together after fixing, greasing, and paintingit. And it ran.
Verl froze his ears one night when the Peerless froze after a date withEva, while he was inside visiting with the Trislers. He walked home toPleasant Ridge (about five miles), freezing his ears on the walk. He saidit was very painful as his ears thawed out.
