Name: William Strait
Given Name: William
Surname: Strait
Sex: M
Birth: 13 JAN 1769 in Isle of Wight Co.,VA
Death: 11 NOV 1856 in Allen Co.,KY
Note:
William, as oldest son of David, took the family to KY after David's death in 1791, and before 1800. He bought 200 acres on Big and Little Difficult Creek in Warren Co. KY on 30 Aug 1799.
In the 1810 census, it appears that there were two female relatives living in his home-- probably his sister Selah is the female in 16-26 age range, and maybe one of his old maid sisters, perhaps Nancy or Dorcas, is the female in the 26-45 age range. The males would be sons Able (16-26), Briggs (10-16), William Logan and Grey Benjamin (0-10), and the daughters would be (probably) Piety and Winifred (16-26), Temperance (10-16), Elizabeth and unknown female (0-10). In 1820, there is again an unknown female in the 16-26 age range. Selah, Abel and Piety have married prior to this census, so do not show in the home. Briggs (16-26), William Logan and Grey Benjamin (10-16), and Wright and Enoch (0-10) would probably be the males.
In 1830, William (60-70) and wife (50-60) have "old maid" Temperance still at home in the 30-40 range, but no other females. The males were William Logan (20-30), Grey Benjamin and Wright (15-20), and Enoch (10-15). (Enoch was actually more like 17.)
By 1840, Elizabeth Jackson is a widow (30-40) with 6 young children, and they are living with William (70-80) and wife (60-70), who still have Temperance at home in the 40-50 range, and Enoch, the 20-30 year old male. William also has two of his deceased son Abel's young daughters with him--Mary Francis (who later marries Enoch) and Constance. [Allen Co. Day Book, p 127, 130] Because there was no one younger than Enoch in 1830, the additional males would be Elizabeth's sons, who fit the age categories.
In 1850, William is an 81 year old widower with dau. Elizabeth Jackson still living with him, as are son Enoch and his wife Mary F. and their 7 year old daughter Mary F.
Although we know that age in a census is often incorrect, here are the ages of William's living children in 1850, and where known, in 1860:
Winifred 55 62 in 1860
Temperance 54
Briggs B. 52 61 in 1860
Elizabeth 45 (78 in 1880)
William Logan 43 53 in 1860
Grey Benjamin 42 50 in 1860
Wright R. 40 48 in 1860
Enoch 37 46 in 1860
