Samuel and Lucinda Tatum

On September 30, 1830 Samuel A. Tatum, son of John Tatum (see John Tatum line), married Lucinda Tatum, the daughter of Nicholas Seaward Tatum in Garrard Co., KY. The middle initial "A." in Samuel’s name does not stand for any given name, but was used to distinguish himself from the many other Samuel Tatums in the area. Samuel must have remained in Garrard County until late in 1849 because he is involved in two suits brought in Garrard County Circuit Court. By 1850, Samuel, Lucinda and their children are living in the Duncansville area of Mercer Co., KY where his occupation is listed as stonemason. According to the The History of Harrodsburg and "The Great Settlement Area" of Kentucky 1774 – 1900, "In 1856, a turnpike was under construction from Mundy’s Landing to the Harrodsburg-Frankfort Pike at a point between El Dorado (McAfee) and Harrodsburg. That same year, the Cornishville Turnpike Company was organized by Christopher Chinn, James Taylor, William Daviess, Frank Kerby, Sandford McBrayer, Joseph Dvaium, B.V. Brewer, H.J. Burns, John Dean and Samuel Tatum. The 1860 census finds them still in Mercer County with Samuel’s occupation now being listed as farmer. Although we do not know the exact date of Samuel A.’s death, the last reference we find to him is the 1870 Federal Census of Washington Co., KY where he is listed as being 65 years old – occupation still farmer. His wife Lucinda along with his 26 year-old son Samuel, and presumably Samuel’s wife Sarah and child Sherman, are leaving with him. His son John, and John’s family, are listed in the census next to Samuel A. and it would appear that they are neighbors. John’s occupation is listed as farmer. In addition, another son of Samuel A.’s, James, is also listed in the 1870 Washington County census with his wife and child and occupation listed as farmer. Parents: John TATUM. Parents: John TATUM.
