Silas WARNICK211 was born on 12 Dec 1830 in Allegany Co. Md. He died on 15 Aug 1900 in Allegany Co. Md. Silas Warnick enrolled in Co. A Unit 3 Potomac Home Brigade MD infantryas a Private with Union Allegiance 11/16/1861. His wife Martha appliedfor a survivor's pension 12/19/1909 which was rejected because Silaschanged his alligiance tothe Conferderacy. "According to the war dept.Silas left the army without being discharged in late 1861. These recordswere repeatedly and vigorously challenged by Martha, who recalled thatSilas had come home with a large amount of money. If indeed Silas foughtfor the Confederacy as recorded in the 1890 census, it is understandablethat the War Dept. had no records...Silas was a farmer....War Dept.records show that Silas was 5'10" tall and had a dark complexion" Source:Walt Warnick:Warnick Families.
Family lore says that there was Native American blood. My research leadsme to believe there is Melungeon blood. According to W. Warnick "AbramWarnik, a negro, was a paid workman in 1786 on what is today MD RT 135heading West toward WV." Melungeons were a people of Indian, Negro andCaucasian blood that had been pushed into the mountains from 1600-1800.They had Turkish, Portuguese and possibly Sephardic Jewish blood. Parents: Joseph WARNICK JR. and Elizabeth FAZENBAKER.

Spouse: Martha FAZENBAKER. Silas WARNICK and Martha FAZENBAKER were married on 29 Jan 1853 in Allegany Co. Md. Children were: Mary Frances WARNICK.

Spouse: Elizabeth FAZENBAKER. Joseph WARNICK JR. and Elizabeth FAZENBAKER were married on 10 Oct 1815 in Allegany Co. Md. Children were: Silas WARNICK.

Joseph WARNICK SR.211 was born in 1754. He died before Mar 1829 in Allegany Co. Md. Joseph Warnick's parents are unknown. Some family traditions say that hewas from Ulster in Northern Ireland and some say that he was fromGermany. Other family traditions say that there was American Indian bloodin the line and one report says "separate records show that Abram Warnik,a negro, was a paid workman on what is today Rt 135 heading west towardWVA. Whether Abram had any connection with Joseph and Sarah is today amatter for speculation. How long before 1787Joseph and Sarah may havearrived in western Maryland is not known."Walt Warnick from "The WarnickFamilies of Western Maryland". Abram Warnik may have been a Melungeon, atri-racial person of the group known as the "We Sorts" or the BrandywinePeople who lived in the mountains along the Potomac River.Pictorialevidence suggests that the Warnicks did probably have Melungeonbackground. SilasWarnick was described as having a "dark complexion" onhis civil war draft application.
