James BRUMFIELD1 was born about 1647 in England. They are found in Rappahannock Co, Virginia in a transportation of persons by Robert Taliafero from England to Virginia in 17 March 1672. By 1677 they are shown in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co, Virginia where records of their children's births appear in the parish register. These may be only their younger children. Others may have been born in the years between 1672 and 1677 and records were not able to be located.
Peshee's name is also indicated to be Patience.

Spouse: Peshee SUTTON. Children were: James BRUMFIELD.

James BRUMFIELD1 was born about 1685. He is probably the same James Brumfield found in land and other records from 1719 to 1755 in King William Co, Caroline Co, Amelia Co and Lunenburg Co, Virginia.
On 20 Feb 1719 James Bromfield purchased 100 acres in King William Co for ten shillings. The land was located at the corner of White Head's land on the south side of the north branch of the Boot Swamp.
On 14 March 1733/4, in a court order from Caroline Co, on the petition of John Anderson Gentleman, and others for clearing the road from the main road to the county line by Nicholas Guillington's it is ordered James Turner be overseer of the road and that he have Jno Mackey, Jno Hammond, Wm Arnold, Wm Lucas, James Brumfield, Nicho Stone, Wm Sanders, Jno Hampton, Thos Hampton,Lewis Turner and Frans Smith to assist him in clearing the road.
On 11 May 1739, in a court order from Caroline Co, James Brumfield acknowledges his deeds of lease and release of land indented to William Evans. apparently he has sold land to William Evans. It appears he moved to Amelia Co, Virginia about this time and this is probably the sell of his property in preparation of the move.
On 16 Nov 1739 in a court order in Amelia Co, the following persons listed as not coming to church; John Dawson, Joel Meadows, Henry Dawson, George Pollard, John Thomas, Thomas Prewitt, John Hudson, John Blanchett, Mathew Harrin, John Hurt, Thomas Wingo, Christopher Sneed, Hance Hendrick, James Brumfield, Thomas Burton, Henry Lester, Richard Beisley and George Shepherd. Ordered the several persons be summoned to appear at next court.
On 21 March 1739 (this date probably being according to the old style calender of the day in which the year was figured from May to April rather than January to December) is recorded a deed in Amelia Co between James Brumfield of Amelia Co and Hans Hendrick of Amelia Co for the purchase of land from Hans Hendrick by James Brumfield. The land was 200 acres in Amelia Co purchased for 9 pounds. It was located on both sides of Mayes' (Magee's) branch of Flat Creek, being part of 400 acres patented to Hans Hendrick on 16 June 1738. Witnesses were Richard Echolds, William Brumfield and John Hendrick. [William is probably James' son, who would have been about 21 years of age at that time.]
James is indicated to have had land in Goochland Co, Virginia. On 1 December 1740 in a land patent for Thomas Devonport who was given patent to 250 acres in Goochland Co on both side of Little Guinea Creek of Appomatox river; the land being bounded by that of Lewis Jenkins and James Brumfield.
On 30 June 1743 James Brumfield of Amelia Co bought 380 acres between branches of Taylors Creek and branches of Dawson's Creek on both sides of the road.
In 1745 in a court order for Amelia Co, an order for Benjamin Hendrick, William Edward, William Silcock, Henry Nelson, George Moor, William Jones, John Harris, William Russell, William Farley Jr, James Broomfield Jr, John Hendricks and James Broomfield be added to gang of which Hance Hendrick is surveyor.
On 22 Nov 1746, in a deed recorded in Amelia County, James Brumfield of Rawley (Rawliegh) Parish sold 190 acres in Amelia Co for 25 pounds to Charles Johnson of St Paul's Parish, Hanover Co, Virginia. The land was located between the branches of Saylor's Creek and the branches of Dawson's Creek on both sides of the road and bounded in part by James Brumfield's line. It was part of a patent to James and was part of the plantation where William Brumfield, son of James, was then living. James' wife, Elizabeth, was privately examined and voluntarily assented to relinquishing her right of dower.
On 28 Dec 1749 in Amelia Co, James Brumfield of Amelia Co, Rawley Parish sold 190 acres to Thomas Renolds of same county and parish. The land was on Saylor's Creek in Amelia Co, Rettaway Parish between the brances of Dawson Creek on both sides of the road bounded by Dawson's line. James made his mark and Elizabeth yielded right of dower. [This must have been in preparation of a move to Lunenburg Co, Virginia where he shows up in the same year on a tithable list taken by William Caldwell. On the same list are two William Brumfields, apparently his son and brother.
In 1753/4 James Brumfield is involved in the administration of the estate of John Francis. James has put up a bond as security for Micajah Francis. When Micajah fails to settle the estate according to James complaint, James apparently filed suit to be repaid the bond or have the estate delivered to him for settlement. In October 1754 in Lunenburg Co, upon complaint of James Brumfield, Micajah Francis was ordered to put up sufficient security or deliver James Brumfield all the estate of James(?) Francis deceased. Also in 1754, action of Brumfield versus Francis. Ruling on the motion of James Brumfield alledging that sometime ago he became security to this court for Micajah Francis his due and faithful administration of John Francis deceased, and that the said estate is deeply wasting and embezling and appprehens himself greatly in danger of suffering thereby praying the court to relieve in the premises, this thereupon ordered that the said Micajah Francis summoned to appear at the next court to be held for this county to answer the complaint. [It might be speculated that this may be Elizabeth's kin and her maiden name may be Francis rather than Watson. In the will of Malachi Francis of Barren Co, Kentucky, William Brumfield of Mercer Co, Kentucky, John and Elizabeth's son, acknowledges he was acquainted with Malachi when they both lived in Virginia and that they were related.]
In 1755 James deeds 200 acres in Amelia Co on Flatt Creek to his son Major for the Fatherly Affection born him. Parents: James BRUMFIELD and Peshee SUTTON.

Spouse: Elizabeth Francis WATSON. James BRUMFIELD and Elizabeth Francis WATSON were married about 1716. Children were: William BRUMFIELD.

John BRUMFIELD1 was born about 1740. He died in Mercer Co., KY. He is found in 1764 in Lunenburg Co, Va on a tithable list with his father. He is said to have fought in the Revolutionary War, having participated in the Battle of Yorktown and is said to have been one of the guards who accompanied Washington when the latter received Cornwallis' sword at the formal surrender of the latter's army. Malachi Francis who is identified as being a kinsman of the Brumfield's is also reported to have been at Yorktown at the taking of Lord Cornwallis. Since companies of militia of the day were formed from men of the same general locale, it seems possible John may have been there, though no record of his service has been found though both men are indicated to be of Halifax Co, Va at the time.
On 29 June 1777 John Brumfield and his wife Elizabeth of the county of Halifax bought 50 acres from Samuel Morton of the same county being that tract where Samuel Morton now lives. Beginning at LeGrand's line thence to Clark's line and along his line to a poplar then a new line to a corner black oak thence a new line to the beginning. Conveyed every part and parcel thereof with the appertances into the said John and Elizabeth Brumfield for and during their natural lives and after their decease then to Wm Brumfield son of the said John and Elizabeth his heirs and assigns forever. Witnesses: W Wright, Jeffrey Palmer, Thomas Palmer. Delphy, wife of S Morton, signed dower release. The unusual request of this transaction and the fact the land remained in the family for 64 years, long after the family left Virginia, and was eventually sold by William in 1841 may indicate that possibly Samuel Morton was Elizabeth's father.
The 1782/5 census of Halifax Co, Va shows John Brumfield with 8 whites in household. Again in the 1782/5 census of Halifax Co is John Brumfield with 9 in household. In the 1784 list of Walt Bennett is John Brumfield with 9 in family.
John is thought to have moved to Fayette Co, Kentucky about 1789 though he may have been there as early as 1785. On 25 November 1785 a request to divide Fayette Co into Bourbon and Fayette counties was signed by Joseph Brumfield. Only two Brumfield's are known to have possibly been in the area at the time; one being John and Elizabeth Brumfield of Virginia and the other being John and Elizabeth (Gibson) Broomfield of Maryland. The latter John has died by 1786 as his wife remarried on 10 May 1786 Robert Campbell.
On 26 June 1790 (1777?) Sheriff W Terry sold 25 acres of land of John Brumfield for nonpayment of taxes for the year 1787. This was bought by Benj Hunt of Halifax. Beginning at a poplar thence on Hunt's line north 45 degrees west 16 poles north 5 east 22 poles to a Black Jack on Morton's Ferry road thence along road to a Red Oak on Cole's new road just below the fork thence on Thomas Puckett's line south 55 east 18 poles to a hickory on Clark's line thence south 45 degrees west 76 poles to the beginning. This would indicate he had left Virginia by 1787.
He is listed on the Fayette Co, Ky tax list as Jno and John Brumfield from 1790 to 1795 and John Broomfield in 1796 and 1797. He may be the John Brumfield found on the Jessamine Co, Ky tax list in 1828. Jessamine Co was formed from Fayette Co about 1799 but John does not show up on either tax list after 1797 though his sons are shown in Jessamine Co from 1799 on. Parents: William BRUMFIELD and Mary LNU.
