SHRK KY08-Correspondence and notes of Achilles Bellucci, 21 CassieStreet, Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: On 17 September 1833, MadisonCounty, Kentucky Deed Book V-245, Pleasant and Catherine Carver sold51 1/4 acres to Catherine's brother, Samuel Shryock. On 4 June 1836,Samuel sold the same acreage to Austin Cosby, probably WingfieldCosby's son. Wingfield was Pleasant's brother-in-law, having marriedPleasant's sister, Elizabeth. James Carver gave Wingfield andElizabeth part of his land in 1836. Another brother of Pleasant, JesseCarver married Elizabeth Cosby. In 1833, Pleasant and Catherine leftMadison County, Kentucky for Fulton County, Illinois. It is traditionthat the move was made in order to raise their family free from theinfluence of slavery. (Kentucky allowed slavery, but not theimportation of slaves. Illinois did not allow any form of slavery.)From an 1876 scrapbook of Catherine Eliza Carver, we find a clipping, probably an obituary, which reads, "For Fourty years he was anacceptable member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church, and for a numberof years, in the earlier part of his life, he was one of its officialmembers." It is very possible the Pleasant's family were Quakers.Pleasant's abhorrence to slavery was, certainly, handed down in theCarver line. In Fulton County, Illinois, Pleasant located in thenorthwest part of section 22 in Buckhart Township, now occupied by theVillage of St. David. In 1837, Pleasant was followed into FultonCounty by Starling Turner, who had married Pleasant's aunt, SophiaCarver. The Turners settled on section 13 of Buckhart Township. NearPleasant, in addition to his children, was Milton Shryock, a grandsonof (John) Frederick Shryock. Milton married Pleasant's daughter,Rebecca, in 1834. The Carver-Shryock-Turner families farmed andprospered in Fulton County. They acquired more land and stock, constantly improving their circumstances by hard work. Four pages ofPleasant Carver's Bible were saved by his great granddaughter, CleonaMcGuire of Prairie City, Kansas. When Cleona was a young girl, hermother told her to burn the old, disintegrating Bible. Cleona had theforesight to remove and preserve the family record pages. These pagesincluded data of Pleasant's father and mother, James and Judith.

SHRK KY08-Correspondence and notes of Achilles Bellucci, 21 CassieStreet, Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: Some say he was born in AlbemarleCounty; it is quite possible. His father, James, sold his land inBedford County in 1788. James may have taken his family to stay withhis brother, William, who lived in Albemarle County. The stay was of afairly short duration, as James is a resident of Kentucky in 1789.Pleasant was the son of James and Judith (Long) Carver.

SHRK KY08-Correspondence and notes of Achilles Bellucci, 21 CassieStreet, Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: Pleasant Carver died 22 November1876 on his homestead. He was 88 years, 4 months and 22 days old, having resided in Buckhart Township for almost 44 years. Pleasant hasa separate marble memorial, identical in size and shape withCatherine's. Parents: .

Spouse: Catherine SHRYOCK. Pleasant Moorman CARVER and Catherine SHRYOCK were married on 4 Sep 1812 in Fayette County, KENTUCKY. 04 September 1812 or 08 September 1812.

SHRK KY08-Correspondence and notes of Achilles Bellucci, 21 CassieStreet, Barre, Vermont 05641-3263: At the Fayette County Courthouse,in "Old Marriage Records 1802-1850" there appears, "1812, October 4,Moman Carver married Cath Shaye". In the 1820 US Census for MadisonCounty, Kentucky, Pleasant Moorman Carver is listed by hisphonetically pronounced middle name, "Moman". Cath Shaye seems like apoor stab at Catherine Shryock. By 1830, the US Census lists himcorrectly, as Pleasant Carver.
