Welch's childhood years were spent farming in the Mt Lebanon area of Jessamine Co. He joined the Army during WWII and served in Africa, Italy and France. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts.
Welch was a finish carpenter most of his adult life after WWII, he built houses for Schneider Construction Co around Lexington, Ky.
"Welch" was staying with his friend, Henry Brock, when he died. They had been playing music and dancing, Welch felt tired and went upstairs to rest, he apparently had a heart attack and was found lying on the floor.
