((Havephoto copy from Jessamine Court House)) Letter from Thomas Cobb: mention of "Ralph Vintner" Cobb. Pat Saupe in conjunction with James L. Cobb, III -and- the lateThomas E. Cobb: " The earliest I could find record of Ventner Cobb in KY, was when hepaid taxes in Jessamine Co, KY, 29 Aug 1800. He is not listed in any ofthe KY Land Grants or VA Land Grants, however, there is a John Cobbs who got two KY Land Grants in Fayette Co, KY, amounting to3,000 acres. The first grant was for 500 acres, dated 06 Dec 1788, onEagles Creek; and the second was 2,500 acres, dated 07 Dec 1788, on EagleCreek. A portion of Fayette Co, KY, became Jessamine Co, in 1798.Ventner had spelled his name "COBBS" in 1800, and this John also spelledit "COBBS" on the land grants - the same as the Cobb Family once used, before they dropped the "S." It is possible Ventner was "John Venter Cobb," or it is possible anothermember of his family, like a brother John, received the grant and tradedthis KY property to Ventner for the property he was living on in NC (Wesearched Ventner under "John Ventner Cobb" and "Ralph Venter Cobb). Inseveral places, it was said that Ventner Cobb was born in Rockingham Co,NC, but I do not think this is so because his father did not come to NCuntil around 1776. It is possible that Ventner came from VA and settledin Rockingham Co, NC, instead of going on to Lincoln Co, NC, with hisfather, or that he married a woman from this area. " Ventner Cobb was born 10 Jun 1751; married ca. 1770 to a possibleJinnie, and died in Jessamine Co, KY, 08 Jul 1805. He is buried in the"Old Cobb Cemetery," in Jessamine Co, KY, although his stone is now gone. A court order in Knox Co, KY, dated 23 Jun 1815 and filed by AmbroseCobb, the son of Ventner Cobb, who left Jessamine Co, KY, in the fall of1814, and went to Knox Co, KY, for two or three years before going toClay Co, KY. This court order, in Book B, Page 352, says: "Ambrose Cobb(X) of Knox Co, KY, Administrator of the Estate of Vinter (Ventner)Cobb, deceased, appoints William Miller, of Knox Co, as his Attorney to collect from William Cobb, of Lincoln Co, State ofNC, money due me as lawful heir of Vinter (Ventner) Cobb, deceased." #2: This same court order is refiled from Clay Co, KY, 12 Sep 1818, andnames all the heirs of Ventner Cobb, as follows: "...Ambrose Cobb,Sally Payne, John Cobb, William Cobb, Jenne Arnold, Polly Finn (Fain),Robert Cobb, Thomas Cobb, Ralph Cobb, heirs of VENTNER COBB, deceased, appoints William Miller, of Knox Co, KY, as Attorney, to collect all themonies due them in NC, of their GRANDFATHER, AMBROSE COBB, deceased." Ventner Cobb did not leave a will, but the settlement of his propertylists as children: Ambrose, John, Jenny, Polly, William, Robert, Thomas, and Ralph. It is not clear why Sally Payne is not listed as one of the children, unless she had already received what she feltwas her share, or unless she had already died. Administration of Ventner's estate was granted unto Ambrose Cobb. Fourof Ventner's children were underage: Jinney Cobb, who made the choice ofAmbrose Cobb for her Guardian; Polly Cobb, who made the choice of JohnCobb for her Guardian; Thomas and Ralph Cobb were listed as infants, andwere bound to James Overstreet to learn the trade of carpenters andhouse joiners until they arrived at the age of 21 years. These twochildren were again bound to John Walters as Guardian, until hereleased Thomas Cobb, in 1808, from his apprenticeship. We have beenunable to follow Ralph Cobb. Kentucky records from the time when Anderson's family lived there, though by no means are complete, but they are extensive. One such compilation is the Allen County Kentucky (Order Book) Day Book 1826-1837 by Martha W. Jackson (Scottsville, KY, 1992). From the forward: ...this is the earliest Order Book to have survived the fire in 1902, the only inkling we would have as to life at that period of time. Minute Books, Day Books or Order Books are the records of the county courts, where people went to ask for assistance in their daily lives. In some states they are called the Court of Common Pleas books. Most likely you will find your family there, if at no other place. Allen County, as such, was not much more than a tiny baby in 1826. Most roads were only fifteen feet wide. Barren River was flowing within its own banks. Communities were far from the courthouse. The way of life was at a much slower pace. The only thing we can be sure of, then as now, was the sun rising and setting each day. Weeds were as high as an "elephant's eye", and allergies were the same in this county as they were for the area. The humidity got just as high then as it does today. At about the age of sixty, Anderson and Rebecca moved with their children to Missouri. There is a letter written by Mary M. (Hammett) Peck apparently in 1838 which describes the arrival of Anderson Cockrill's whole family to Benton County, Missouri from Kentucky. The Cockrills settled near a little village known as Pleasant Gap in an area which was organized as Bates County in 1841. Anderson's large family became entwined in the early history of Pleasant Gap. Listed in the 1850 Census for Bates Co., MO, living in District No. 6, dwelling #233, as Anderson Cockrill, age 70, a farmer born in North Carolina [sic]. Enumerated with Rebecca (a. 65, bp NC), James (a. 37, a laborer born in KY), William (a. 9, bp. KY), and Lucindia (a. 6, bp. KY). James Anderson Cockrill was living with his parents along with his two children, after his wife died. In 1853, Anderson and Rebecca, were both around 75 when they walked to California from Missouri during the Hagans-Cockrill immigration and settled in Santa Rosa. A few years later, it appears that they were part of Henry Beaver's extended family which moved from Sonoma County to the San Jose area where Anderson passed away (any mention of him in Santa Clara County documents or the location of his burial has yet to be found, though there is a strong belief that he is buried in Gilroy) and his widow remained with the Beavers when they moved to Salinas. Mary Peck's letter was to her brother and sister-in-law, Anderson & Mary Hammett, describing the arrival of her Uncle Anderson and Aunt Rebecca along with their children's families from Allen County, Kentucky to Missouri: LETTERS OF MRS. V. V. HOYLE. Dear Brother & Sister: Benton County Mo May 22nd 1838. Excuse me for not writing sooner, but it was owing to our post office not being convenient which causes us many times to delay writing though we would not regard going 25 miles if we were certain of a letter. We have not heard from any of you since Dow returned yet I still hope I am not forsaken. When I had no person with me in a land of strangers but a Brother in law you my guess I felt desolate but I trusted he would protect me which he did but in the midst of my lonesome hours I was cheered by the company of James Cockrill & Elizabeth. They arrived here the 13th Nov. stayed with us until the last of December then we moved further down the river they a mile below where we live. Feb. the 5th Uncle Anderson, Aunt Rebecca, & Larkins family landed, moved 4 miles below us on an improvement he made which he thinks highly of. He appears well satisfied. He says he can have venison, turkey & fish as much as he cares about. Uncle Anderson has bought the improvement. James lives on & lives with him. He gave 50 dollars for 50 acres. He says he would not exchange it for his whole profession in Ky. Harrison has bought an improvement & appears well satisfied. Aunt Rebecca can make as much butter & cheese as their family can make use of. She says she can get as much milk from one of her cows here as she could from all in Kentucky. They milk three cows. We also have three milch cows which afford us milk a plenty. We have two besides ourselves in family James F. Groom & William Peck. He landed the 5th of May and intends living with us. James Groom has lived with us ever since November. They have made & improvement & have planted our corn. It looks very well though there has been a great quantity of rain lately which has made against people's crops. They have run the Osage several times this Spring. We live in Missouri. We have circuit preaching every five weeks at our hour. (must mean house) Preacher is of the name of Roberson. He is a very intelligent man. We have no Baptist preaching in the settlement where we live but about the Prairie [? sic] they have Baptist preaching about 20 miles distance. Amanda & Lurana Cockrill are not so well satisfied as the rest owing to the country's being thinly inhabited, but they are a great satisfaction to me. Lurana & Amanda sends [sic] their compliments to Caroline Mother & the rest of the family and wishes to be remembered to you & Mary. I should like to see you all once again but I never expect to [be] in that County. Tell the little girls Adelaide & Margaret that their Aunt Pop loves them and longs to see them and wants them not to forget her and Adelaide must learn to write her a letter. I want you Anderson come look at this country and be your own judge. Write soon after this comes to hand, letting me know what your are all doing and whether you are yet alive. For my part I have been blessed with tolerable good health since I saw you for which I feel very thankful as it is the greatest of blessings. Dow has had his health very well this spring. He thinks the complaint of his breast is broke in a great measure. Mary I think if you was here in some parts of this country you could make your living by teaching school & Larkin thinks Andy could almost make a fortune by teaching. I must tell you something about my chickens. I have a fine chance [choice?] of them. Give my love to Mother Melinda Caroline Harrison & Marion. Tell Mother I still remember her. Tell Caroline to write me a letter without fail. Remember my love to Uncle Billy's family and to Emily I will say marry and come here. I send my compliments to Mrs. Morgan's family and I want to know if they are coming to Missouri. Also my love to Mrs. Thomas. Tell her I remember her as a Mother. I remember you all my Brothers Sisters & Neighbors your features are very plain to me but shall we never see each other faces on earth so let us try to meet in Heaven. Dow sends his best respects to you & Mary also. Except of my tenderist regard, I remain your sister. Lorenzo D & Mary M Peck Anderson & Mary Hammett Anderson Hammett Allen County, Kentucky Scottsville from Peck to Anderson Herbert J. Boothroyd further remarks: Incidentally, our Hammett KY family apparently lost contact with the Missouri branch even before they went to Calif. Victoria Hoyle moved to San Francisco around 1910 and wrote much of family history after that, with no mention of them, and the 1838 letter is the last I found from them in my aunt's collection. Victoria's grandson grew up with her and got me interested in genealogy in 1947, but he first made contact with Effie Joy and others a few years after that. Spouse: Rebecca VENABLE.
